Ethical Dilemma
Introduction An ethical dilemma is a situation where people are forced to make a choice between two options available to them. It is necessary to explain that regardless of the option an individual takes both options have negative consequences.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Ethical Dilemma specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More However, the individual chooses an option that have few negative impacts on the event or people involved (Adair 2013). This essay uses an ethical dilemma case study to illustrate the issues involved in this context and how they are managed without causing a lot of harm to all the parties involved. Example of an Ethical Dilemma Engrave Computers is a technology based company that specializes in producing software that enable managers to monitor the performance of employees and predict their productivity. This software also gives companies opportunities to explore various issues that affect the performance of employees and propose solutions to these challenges. I am the manager of this company and Ben has been very influential in developing this software. The company does not demand that employees should hand over their production rights and other patent requirements to it; in fact, it encourages its workers to be creative and invent software that will boost its sales and retain the right to distribute, sell, share or change the particulars of their inventions (Thomas 2010). The company gives workers this privilege to motivate them to continue rendering their services without feeling the company or managers are misusing their talents. The company is registered to take part in an international exhibition where the winner is awarded a quarter of its working capital and offered a free one year advertising space in an international broadcasting channel. I am confident that Ben will make the company proud since he has always won this contest. On the other hand, this company exp erienced significant losses last year because most employees reported to work late or were absent without seeking permission from the human resource management (Pollock 2011).Advertising Looking for essay on ethics? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More As a result, an urgent meeting was convened and it was agreed that absenteeism and lateness will not be tolerated and anyone culpable will be suspended for three months. Workers were requested to read the new regulation and append their signatures to show that they agreed on the terms stated by the human resource department. Last week the company secretary was suspended since she failed to observe this regulation and this was a warning that no one will be spared. Ben reported to work yesterday after being absent for four days and claims that he was not feeling well. Everybody is keen watching what will happen to him as pressure continues to pile on the human resource department to ta ke corrective measures against him (Saaty 2011). However, this department felt that this case was beyond its abilities and forwarded the matter to my department. I forwarded the issue to the board of directors but I was directed to solve it within 24 hours. Dilemmas This situation was not as easy as it looked due to the considerations that I had to observe before taking any step. There were challenges regarding all alternatives available to me at that moment. First, being a manager means I had to a stake step that would ensure the operations if the company would not be affected. This means that the operations of the company would go on despite the measures I would have taken. Secondly, I was supposed to show other employees that no one is above the policies of this company and if anyone commits a mistake the individual must be punished. Thirdly, it was necessary to show employees that I was committed to implement the policies regarding lateness and absenteeism (Arthur 2009). The hum an resource department had suspended the secretary and thus I was supposed to follow the same path. Lastly, I was supposed to ensure that the company participates in the oncoming exhibition since it had already confirmed its participation. Ethical Steps The policies of this company were changed to ensure that an employee who comes late is suspended for three months. This was motivated by the poor performance witnessed in the last financial year and no one was willing to experience another financial crisis. Therefore, I suspended Ben for three months to ensure other workers become obedient and follow the regulations provided to them.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Ethical Dilemma specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The following are ethical considerations that guided me to take this step. This decision was motivated by the need to ensure that no one commits this mistake against regardless of the position of an indi vidual in the company (Haberfeld 2012). Ben was an indispensable employee but his actions were considered to have economic, legal and social impacts on the company and other workers. First, the suspended secretary would have complained of double standards if I would have ignored suspending Ben. This would have led to a legal tussle between her and the company. Secondly, other workers would have noticed that Ben was not punished and this could crate differences among them (McCarthy 2011). Thirdly, I knew that we were going to miss the prestigious prize on the scheduled event; however, this was not as important as other activities of this company. In addition, the occasion is held after every five years and this means that it would have significant impacts on this company. Therefore, my decision was economically responsible since it focused on the long term gains the company will make if employees are punctual and attend all activities as the company directed them (Baaske 2009). The c ompany will never make losses due to absenteeism or lateness even though it was going to miss the award. In addition, it was ethical since it showed that I was promoting professional discipline in the company. It is advisable to follow the rules and policies regarding work to ensure that workers respect with them without favoring some workers (Farrell 2012). The decision also promoted respect for the rule of justice and equality at the company. It is necessary to explain that the secretary was suspended after failing to meet the requirements of the company; therefore, it would have been very unfair to exempt Ben from punishments yet they are all employees of this company. Even though, I had the option of punishing him after his presentation this was not a logical alternative since it was bound to affect him during that period (Harrison 2010). Therefore, my decision was appropriate and I will hot hesitate to suspend another worker in case the individual violates the policies of this company.Advertising Looking for essay on ethics? It is necessary to ensure that they make informed choices and if possible they should consult their friends before taking any step. These dilemmas put our faith and commitments to test; therefore, they should be approached very carefully. The Major Aspects of Organizations Resourcing Strategies
The Major Aspects of Organizations Resourcing Strategies Selection Employee selection process constitutes a major aspect of organizationââ¬â¢s resourcing strategies because it defines and protects people being crucial for the organization. Due to the fact that the selection process consists in soliciting all possible information about the candidates to assess their suitability for a particular organization, it is very sophisticated, creating a solid platform for matching the recruits with the organizational staff.Advertising We will write a custom assessment sample on The Major Aspects of Organizationââ¬â¢s Resourcing Strategies specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Therefore, the strictness of approaches to selecting people is vital because negligence of specific criteria can lead to negative consequences. In addition, managers should be aware of the fact that selection process should effectively supported by the technological innovation because inaccuracy of the information delivered can lead to failure of choosing the appropriate candidate, as it happened to Liverpool Direct, a leading service company located in London (Bocij, Greasely and Hickie, p. 128). The chief executive David McElinney realized the major problem and managed to eliminate the problem, but the losses were still inevitable. Managing Diversity Cultural diversity is identified a concept demanding serious change to all spheres of organizational activities in order to ensure that various strategies and characteristics of human resources are highly appreciated. The effectiveness of successful diversity management is evident, specifically when it comes to enhanced creativity and innovation, better comprehension of customersââ¬â¢ needs, and improved recruitment opportunities. More positive moral and greater employee retention are also the outcomes of fruitful introduction of consistent diversity management. One of brightest examples of appropriate diversity management is Pacific Dunlop, a large Aust ralian company that acknowledges the explicit connection between poor moral and negligence of social and cultural backgrounds (Steger and Erwee, n. d., p. 78). The company strictly embraces diversity management strategies and successfully contributes to employee retention. In addition, the companyââ¬â¢s person-oriented strategy positively influences the organizational performance as well because workers are more likely to favor the business activities in healthier environments. Human Resource Development On the one hand, straight course on identifying the goals and achieving the results is one of the conditions for successful business management. On the other hand, excessive focus on achievements can lead to a stressful and unhealthy situation within an employed environment.Advertising Looking for assessment on business economics? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Consequently, a good manager should be able to stri ke the balance between those orientations and create a harmonious, two-polar approach in the sphere of human resource management and development. Case study of Wall-Mart proves that inappropriate human resource management can lead to serious consequences for organizational productivity and performance. Specifically, labor right violations and reluctance of managerial staff to introduce changes to treating their personnel negatively affected the companyââ¬â¢s image and performance. Assessing HRM Effectiveness Inability to treat the employees effectively can put the effectiveness of human resource management in question. Failure to introduce trustful and reliable relationships between the members of an organization can have a negative impact on the organizational performance. Traditionally, HR professionals perceive employee morale and commitment from conceptual viewpoint. However, in order to fulfill the role of HR agent effectively, concepts and theories should be substituted wit h evidence and practice. Inability to introduce effective human resource strategies were also observed in a leading document management company Xerox. The problem is that the company had significant problems in terms of work culture and leadership that occurred during the tenure of Rick Thoman and Paul Allaire. People problems were specifically connected with wrong decision made by the managers in terms of sales force reorganization that was less prioritized. Therefore, the industry personal should have been more concentrated on the organizational goals rather than on the needs of individual customers, which resulted in the companyââ¬â¢s decline. Regarding the discussions presented above, it should be stressed that the HR practitioners presented in the case were part of the problems related to the job analysis, recruitment, and human resource management assessment and development.Advertising We will write a custom assessment sample on The Major Aspects of Organizationâ⠬â¢s Resourcing Strategies specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In particular, a monopolistic view on the business strategy did not provide results for the investment house Foy and Pirelli because the company did not succeed in meeting the employeesââ¬â¢ needs. Managers strongly ignored their initiative; instead, they were more focused on their goals. In addition, the case with MoneyPenny proves that considering cultural and social background is crucial for the success of business operations. Therefore, before initiating the project in Bangkok, the manager should think more carefully over the appropriate candidature for the business journey. The next issue related to human resource management is the development and advancement of techniques aimed at improving working conditions and settling a more favorable emotional climate within an organization. In other words, managers should strike the balance between person-oriented and goal-oriented p olicies being the major conditions for reaching high management performance. In this respect, the case with Steve Lambert proves that aggressive polices deprived of organizational moral will not contribute to positive results and achievement on the part of the employees. Similar to this case, the managers from the investment house Foy and Pirelli also failed to follow the above recommendations and did take into account individual needs as the leading in reaching high level of organizational performance. They were, therefore, part of the problem in this situation. There were also the parties that positively contributed to the management performance, like Mike Burnett, a new manager of Foy and Pirelli who managed to solve the problem with low management performance through cultural revolution. In whole, most of the cases prove incompetence of managers in dealing with human resource management. References Bocij, P., Greaseley, A., and Hickie, S. (2009). Important phenomenon of interpersonal communication Essay
Important phenomenon of interpersonal communication - Essay Example This paper will focus on the interpersonal relationships found in business, such as between customers and companies, among co-workers, and between managers/supervisors and their subordinates. This paper provides an empirical description of the Social Exchange Theory, a theoretical explanation of the phenomenon, and a critical evaluation of the validity and utility of the theoretical explanation. There is an empirical description of the Social Exchange Theory, which begins with the concept of knowledge sharing. Knowledge sharing is an important goal of interpersonal communication at organizations, because it can yield competitive advantages (Wu et al. 84). Nonetheless, organizations do not always exert adequate effort to develop mechanisms that successfully persuade employees to share knowledge (Wu et al. 84). Knowledge is precious and knowledge-sharing behavior is an example of social exchange in the workplace (Wu et al. 84). People who have the knowledge do not always feel free to s hare them, unless there are perceived benefits in doing so, which is a fundamental argument of the Social Exchange Theory. ... ndividual altruismâ⬠and ââ¬Å"a social interaction environment.â⬠The sampling came from Taiwanese high-tech industries, particularly research and development (R&D) teams. Finding showed that employeesââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"perceived interpersonal trust,â⬠from colleagues or supervisor, was found to be positively associated with their propensity to share knowledge (91). Employeesââ¬â¢ altruism is also a trait that affected the tendency to share knowledge in the workplace and altruism also lessened the association between trust of colleagues and knowledge sharing (91). Furthermore, an ââ¬Å"organizational social interaction environmentâ⬠improves the positive association between trust of colleagues and knowledge sharing (91). Hence, trust is critical to knowledge sharing or the formation of some of the basic interpersonal relations that organizations require to become competitive. Whitener et al. explored the kinds of behavior managers may perform to build trust. Th ey used the agency and social exchange theories and proposed an exchange relationship framework that recognizes organizational, relational, and individual factors that support or restrain managerial trustworthy behavior. Their model argued for the importance of trust in creating strong and knowledge-sharing relationships. The empirical research showed that the social exchange theory is grounded on trust and from trust and expectations of benefits, positive social exchange can occur. A theoretical explanation of the phenomenon will further help understand the social exchange theory. The social exchange theory, as developed by Blau in 1964, states that an individual may seek to create an exchange relationship with others by willingly giving benefits to others first and then expecting some level of return in the future (Wu et al.

Research article - Essay Example The study also assessed the environmental conditions in the emergency nursesââ¬â¢ work environment so as to determine the possibility of these two factors affecting each other. In this particular study, recent articles on the burnout experienced by emergency nurses were used in a quantitative study. The data also contained the observations of numerous emergency nurses who were asked to provide genuine answers about observations about nurse burnout. The results indicate that 52 per cent of nurses in an emergency department in Ireland experience high levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation, which are significantly related to the nature of their work environment. Quantitative research is often used in researches conducted in the healthcare sector because it tends to produce reliable as well as factual results. After the cases of nurse burnout have been documented, for instance, quantitative research allows for the numeric records of the findings to function as an indication of the reality in larger emergency nurse populations in medical facilities. In addition, the statistical system that is characteristic of quantitative research is suited for the purpose of determining how to capitalize on interventions that can prevent nurse

CD for Holden Essay Example for Free
CD for Holden Essay How have you been? I have actually missed you a lot. The other day, I took a road trip with my parents and I thought of you. I remembered how you told me you wanted me to burn a CD with music for you. Thus, I listened to my iPod the whole way and selected many cool songs that I think you would like. Please get back to me and tell me which ones you liked and all. Also, I know you told me to only put around 10 songs but I could not contain myself and I chose 16 of them. I hope you will like them, because to tell you the truth all of these songs kill me. The first song I chose to put in the CD is 3 Cigarettes by The Sleeping. Besides the beat and instruments that are cool as hell, the lyrics really remind me of you. First of all, there are the obvious connections to cigarettes, which seem to be one of your passions. Also when he says I have been drinking more and eating less reminds me of you. It is pretty much all that you have done lately, smoked, drank, and thought of Jane. Just remember that just like they say we dont have to blame ourselves you should not blame yourself for everything that has been happening. Finally, the line Do you care? Are you there? Are you listening? kills me and I am sure it will kill you too. It is calling for peoples attentions, it is calling all those phonies and it makes me wonder if anyone really cares about me. I am sure it will make you feel the same way too. The next song I chose was Through the Glass by Stone Sour. I think that this song is talking about an insider who became a stranger and now they are looking from the outside back in. This makes me think of you because many times throughout your life you have alienated yourself. You just look from the outside as time passes by and sometimes you feel like going back in, and being an insider again but you dont. The phrase Im looking at you through the glass; dont know how much time is passed. Oh God it feels like forever makes me think of you a lot. Because you are always thinking about how quickly time passes by. It seems like you have been alienating yourself for a long time now, it feels like forever. The next song on your CD is Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton. I just had to add this one. I know that you are really sensitive about your brothers death and all, and you dont like talking about it. However, I think that the sooner you face reality the better it will be for you and everyone. This song was made for his son who died. He was very meaningful to Eric Clapton just like your brother Allie was to you. I know you so well, that I am sure that you have wondered about many of the things that this song is stressing about. Such as if Allie would remember your name, and if it would all be the same. Also, there is a bigger picture to it. I remember about an specific conversation with your sister Phoebe you told me about. She asked you to name one thing you really liked and you said you really liked Allie. I think you should listen to lines such as Cause I know I dont belong here in heaven and Cause I know I just cant stay here in heaven. The bigger picture that these lines are showing and I am trying to prove to you is that as much as you love Allie you have to let him go. You are both in different worlds now, and wherever he is, you dont belong there. At least not yet. Holden, you should really get on with your life and just keep with you all of the good memories you have with Allie but let him go. It is the best thing to do. I am sure you will enjoy quite a lot the next song I picked out for you. It is a classic by the great band Pink Floyd. This one is called Another Brick in the Wall. You might have heard of it already. The meaning of the song is to say that in school they treat us all the same and they do not respect that everyone is a separate and different individual. Pink Floyd is saying that this is all false control and they are putting all the students together and trying to make them all the same, therefore losing their individualities. I can tell that you will agree with these lines, and that they will really kill you. When they say All in all its just another brick in the wall, the meaning is that every single one of us students are just a tiny brick of the wall of hypocrisy, superficiality, and shallowness that they are trying to build. They are the ones that you every so often refer to as the phonies. That is what I think this song is criticizing, phonies who try to make everyone be the same. They try to make everyone be like them. Hopefully there are still people out there, like me and you, who are going to fight this and knock down this wall of phonies. The next song I picked is called Boys Dont Cry by The Cure. It makes me think of you and Jane. When I listen to it, I think of how you like Jane so much and she is the only girl that you truly care about but you wont tell her. Just like the song is describing, you often say I would You mention things that you would do, such as give her a buzz, and visit her, and ask her on a date. However, you never do any of it. The line boys dont cry is obviously making a critic to some boys like you, who would rather hide their feelings and appearing tough instead of telling the truth and possibly crying. I love the line I try and laugh about it hiding the tears in my eyes and the one I try to laugh about it; cover it all up with lies. Both of these lines are very strong. They also show things that you do. You often act all nonchalant and like giving Jane a buzz is just something you would do any day. However, I think it is much deeper than that. You are scared of being rejected by her because she is the only one you care about. So, you just act casual and cool about it and lie and hide your feels for her. The next song, The Permanent Rain by The Dangerous Summer follows the same line as the one before. I think that just like the singer is saying, I wont let this die, you shouldnt let what you have with Jane die. You and her both have a really strong connection and bond. I think it would be very sad if you did not do anything about it. I think you should go and tell her how you feel. It is really the best thing to do. When he says, I know its not helping to hear me say: I wish it was me in the car the other day really makes me think of you as well. Even though you have never actually told her about it, you have wondered for a long time about her and Stradlater in his teachers car. You wonder about what happened and you cannot help but wish that it were you with her in the car instead of Stradlater. Finally, when the line You know it meant a lot, but I was just a kid comes up it seems like it was written for you. You were both too young to fully understand the connection that you both h ad. Now, I think you are old and mature enough to understand it and your relationship with Jane should mean even more if you tell her how you feel. The next song, however, is not about Jane. It is about High School, hence the name High School Low by Say Anything. Just like you, the guy in the song is sixteen. He is also worrying about things such as the whole high school experience, and girls. I find there is even a connection to you when he says, My teacher says that Im brilliant. It reminds me of how Mr. Spencer would try and get the best out of you. He did not say you were brilliant, however, he acknowledge that you had so much more potential than the one you were showing with your poor grades and test scores. The passage about looking at pictures of himself when he was a child can also be compared to you. I know that you have often thought about how it is such a horrible experience having to grow up and all, but we will get to this topic later. To do with the whole grades issue, he also says My grades look pretty damn low. I want to motivate myself, but how the hell am I supposed to work. This is something that is so similar to you that it could have come out of your mouth. At the same time that you realize that your grades are low and you need to make an effort, you dont know how to. You are confused about what you should do that would motivate yourself. I remember you told me that when your psychoanalyst asked you if you would apply yourself when you got back to school in September you said you did not know. I mean of course you want to, but as you said it yourself, you are not able to tell how you are going to behave. One phrase that is constantly repeated is take me away. Just like you, this boy wants to run away from these high school days and from all the phoniness and move on to a better part of life; be it the past or the future. Speaking of phonies, this is what my next chosen song is about. It is called Mutiny! by Set Your Goals. This song is clearly criticizing people. In my opinion, it is criticizing the phonies. What leads me to think this way is when things such as superior, you are inferior and heroes have betrayed are said. This is talking about people who think that they are better than other s when they really are nothing special. It is also talking about how people can just betray you and change all of the sudden. Finally, the line I will find the line and cross it every time reminds me of you. It reminds me of how you many times alienate yourself as a form of protection. Therefore, I think that crossing the line is a symbol for you of that crazy red hunting hat you wear. You wear it to prove your point and to show people that you dont care and youre fine with being different. This is nothing else but a way of crossing the line. The next song I chose is called Flake and it is by Jack Johnson. In case you dont know, a flake is someone who says that they will go somewhere or do something and then they dont. Am I the only one who sees a resemblance here to you?! Yes, I am going to start talking about Jane again. You seriously have to stop saying that you will call her, unless you are actually planning on doing it. Otherwise, you are just flaking. The strong line It seems to me that maybe pretty much always means no is what I feel sometimes when you start talking to me about her. You say that you might call her if you feel like it. Now, I am starting to see it as something you just have to say to feel good about yourself, to show that you have the power to call her. I think you should not flake Jane. Besides that, it is a great song and I really love the instrumental and the beat for it. I am sure you will love it too! The next song I picked is a slow one. I find it truly beautiful. It is called Cannonball by Damien Rice. It is also a love song. What I think it is talking about is about someone whom he really loves but that he cannot be with for a reason or another. He talks about how he remembers the girl all the time, and the things that remind him of her. I think that the way he feels about this girl is just like how you feel about Jane. It reminds me of how you remember her because of little things such as how she always kept her kings on the back. This song also brings up the issue you have of lying and it claims that the issues he had to face in life when dealing with love are the ones that made him be like that. It also reminds me of you when he mentions that It is not hard to fall when you float like a cannonball because you can often be very heavy and therefore you sink into your issues like a cannonball sinking down in an ocean. My favorite like on this song, however, has to be the last one. It says when you know that you just dont know. I think it is talking about when people are confused and how it takes courage, to even admit that you are lost. Speed of Sound by Coldplay is also sort of a slow song. The main point to this song is that it is talking about time. I think that Coldplay is trying to show how everything moves so fast, like the speed of sound. Time goes by too quickly, Holden. I know you have already realized that before, considering how you have told me countless times and made me notice that once we notice everything has already happened. This song could have been sung by someone who is waiting on a platform and they are noticing how fast things happen. It also talks about the issues we all have with dealing with this fast-moving time. Be prepared because this next song I am about to introduce to you will kill you. I am serious. It is called Forever Young and it is by Alphaville. It is impossible for me to listen to it and not think of you. The main point to this song is the fact that we all get old. The singer obviously wants to be forever young just like you! You tend to resist the natural process of maturity and growing up. It seems like you want to be forever young without having any responsibilities or having to deal with any problems of adulthood. I think this is mostly because you are scared. You are scared of what awaits for you, and it all sort of mystify you. That is why you invent that you do not want to be an adult because it is a world of phoniness. It is your way of running away from the fact that you are actually scared of growing up because you do not have a clue of what any of it is like. A line on this song that I find really interesting is Some are like water, some are like the heat, some are a melody and some are the beat. I think that this line is talking about the people that make our life what it is. The people that are there for us. I think that water is a symbol for the people that are a bit colder and the heat for the ones who are warm. The people who are a melody are the ones, like Jane, who come every once in a while and they completely change how you were before, just like the melody of a song. The melodies of someones life are not always there, but we can never be the same after they leave. Finally, the beat is a symbol for the people who are there to support you in your life constantly, just like the beat in a song. It is also impossible to be the same without the beats of our life, such as Phoebe, because they are the ones that we can call whenever we need. I think you will really enjoy the next song I picked. It is called Marching Bands of Manhattan by Death Cab for Cutie. First of all, the main reason of why it reminds me of you is the whole New York experience. I know how much that city describes you. I am sorry but I will have to bring old Jane up once again. I think that this song is mostly talking about how he wants to be with someone that doesnt know how they feel. I think that this is your type of song, and I hope you will like it. If you like it, you should look up more songs by Death Cab for Cutie, they all send like this and have wonderful lyrics. Well, this is pretty much all, I hope you enjoyed the songs I chose and you will take some of the advice I gave you. Remember to get back to me and tell me what you thought of them. Oh! Also, I hope you like the cover for the CD! I know how crazy you have been about those ducks on Central Park and I just thought you would enjoy that. Love, Deb P.S. The two other songs I added were songs I found searching on the internet that were inspired by The Catcher in the Rye and I thought that they would be interesting to add.

Telling It Like It Is Essay -- Essays Papers
Telling It Like It Is ââ¬Å"My country, right or wrong,â⬠is a thing that no patriot would think of saying except in a desperate case. It is like saying, ââ¬Å"My mother, drunk or sober.â⬠ââ¬âG. K. Chesterton, The Defendant These are indeed desperate times. On September 11, 2001, America witnessed the worst act of terrorism in U.S. history. Grief-stricken, angry, and shocked, people from all over America came together in the face of tragedy and solidly affirmed their pride in the U.S.A. The outpouring of patriotism that resulted from this tragedy was astonishing. Our country came together: specific agendas were swept aside in favor of partisanship and overwhelming support for our leaders, for our institutions, for our democracy. Picking up on this trend, the media, typically a primary conveyer of culture in America, soon adopted a positive attitude towards the government. Patriotic bias, in part because of the public demand, began dictating broadcasts. In fact, the pendulum swung far over to the radical side: the media by and large accepted governmental censorship requests, ceased to question our leaders, and even began censoring their interviews, handling our nationââ¬â¢s institutions with velvet gloves. We championed our country, with its ideals of freedom and democracy, and in the process lost a part of our freedom and democracy. Governmental Controls Taking advantage of the patriotic fever sweeping the nation, the federal government began making ââ¬Å"requestsâ⬠of the media, asking them to censor their coverage of particular events, or to withhold information regarding the government from the public. These requests were not particularly surprising. What was startling was the by and large acceptance of these reque... ...San Francisco Chronicle, 6 Jan. 2002: D4. 7. ââ¬Å"Day,â⬠D4. 8. Cassius Domino Effect
Cassiusââ¬â¢ Domino Effect The divine lightning that rules our lives has always made us both the protagonist and the victim. In William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s tragedy, Julius Caesar, he focuses on the actions and results in the play that occur in a domino effect, with characters that set forth events that lead to great suffering. In Julius Caesar, Cassius is the tragic figure who contributes to the vision of the conspirators as a whole, but through the ââ¬Å"divine lighting,â⬠matters could not be helped.Cassiusââ¬â¢s personality leads to his, and many others, fatal downfall. Cassiusââ¬â¢s is seen as the leader of the conspirators, the manipulative master behind the cruel plan. He, with many others, disdain Caesar for his arrogance, yet Cassius encompasses the same exact trait. His arrogance is shown in Act I, when he and Brutus are talking, and Cassius notices the unease in Brutusââ¬â¢ eyes when they believe Caesar is crowned. He says, ââ¬Å"I was born as free as Ca esar,â⬠(1. 2, 104).In this speech Cassius is trying to convey the idea that Brutus is as good as Caesar so that Brutus will be more inclined to join the conspiracy, but Cassius uses the first comparison of Caesar to explain that Caesar is no better than he. His cunning, manipulative nature bleeds through in his very first speech, his arrogance is clearly shown and his motives laid down. Cassiusââ¬â¢ jealousy leads to his revulsion of Caesar. Only Caesarââ¬â¢s death being the answer to Cassiusââ¬â¢ insecurities. The cunning manipulation Cassius practices affects everybody in the play.Cassius manipulation so purely spoken by Brutus when he proclaims, ââ¬Å"What dangers would you lead me, Cassius/That you would have me seek into myself/ For that which is not in me? â⬠(1. 2, 69-71). Brutusââ¬â¢ jealousy of Caesar had not yet progressed to the level of malevolence, but as Brutus said Cassius spurns him on selfishly to mold him into what benefits him the most. Brut us is troubled at first, unsure what to do, and his odd behavior aggravates Portia, causing her to grieve because of the knowledge she does not know.Once the conspiracy is revealed to her she becomes edgy, and the arrival of Octavius sends her into a fit of stress which ends with her swallowing ââ¬Å"fire. â⬠Caesarââ¬â¢s death is the main source of suffering, but Caesars anguish is not because of his death. His suffering is revealed in the moments before he dies, he utters the most memorable line in history, he cries, ââ¬Å"Et tu Brute? â⬠(3. 1, 85). This is the cause of Caesarââ¬â¢s complete death, the death of not just his body but of his trust.Caesar could handle the betrayal of the other senators, because that is politics, but the betrayal of someone he viewed as a friend, someone he loved, destroyed him. Antonyââ¬â¢s speech, causing the most wide spread wave of despair, leads the Romans to exclaim, ââ¬Å"O noble Caesar! / O woeful day! . . . We will be r evenged,â⬠(3. 2, 211-214). Their anger then leads to the suffering of many, even the innocent, as is exampled with the Poet Cinnaââ¬â¢s death. The pristine control Cassius prides himself with, slips and turns Cassius into anything but the victor in this war of superiority. After Caesarââ¬â¢s death Brutus becomes the leading face of the conspirators, leaving Cassius without even the pride of that small feat. Brutus becomes the leading face of the conspirators so now Cassius cannot even pride himself with that. When Cassius and Brutus fight, thinking the other has deceived them, Cassius falters, ââ¬Å"Cassius is aweary of the worldââ¬â/ Hated by the ones he loves, braved by his brother/ . . . / Strike as thou didst at Caesar, for I know/ When thou didst hate him worst, thou I lovedst him better/ Than ever thou lovedst Cassius,â⬠(4. , 106-119). Cassius jealousy still remains, despite Caesarââ¬â¢s death. The feeling of unworthiness still runs deep, he feels like he still canââ¬â¢t compare to Caesar and it is tearing him apart. In the end though, through another misunderstanding, Cassius believes that the battle has been lost and his close friend, Titinius has been captured, he exclaims, ââ¬Å"O coward that I am to live so long/ To see my best friend taââ¬â¢en before my face! â⬠(5. 3, 36-37). Ironically as Caesar has lost his best friend so has Cassius, which leads to his conflicted death. In the end Cassius is the conductor of his own suffering. It was Frye who wisely proclaimed that the tragic heroes seem the inevitable conductors of power, yet they become the both the instrument and victim of the ââ¬Å"divine lighting. â⬠Cassius is seen as the leader of the conspirators leading him to contribute to the vision of the conspirators as a whole, but through his choices he causes the suffering of many including himself. Revenge is bittersweet.
