Ayda Critical Reflection Essay Introduction Within the setting of nursing there has been a noteworthy change in nursing over the most recent two decades, where nursing and clinical information has prompted changes where patients can no longer remain in medical clinic and decrease in emergency clinic beds. Experts who are utilized in the medicinal services industry are managing intensely sick patients who are in more need of care (usher et al 2009). As experts we should find the nature that is offered to us by reacting and utilizing intelligent contemplations to upgrade the significant viewpoints in the public eye (Lauder et al 2004). What's more, qualified medical caretakers, recognize and understanding is fundamental for their training to stay current, consistent improvement in thinking about our considerations, and what we do gets Habitual to our training (usher et al 2008). It is a need for medical attendants to utilize basic speculation as it encourages accumulate signi ficant data to help professionals in inspecting suppositions and distinguish connections and examples (Parker and Clare 2000). We start this part by investigating the idea of basic reflection and why it is significant for a medical attendant, just as give a diagram of the related enactment that requires the utilization of intelligent intuition by and by enlisted medical attendants, the following area tends to the Gibbs Cycle of what, why and review of meanings of reflection. Medical attendants are getting increasingly mindful of the need to use and improve their training, just as consider the political, social structure issues influencing it. (Taylor 2000). As changes are happening with the nursing setting it is fundamental for medical attendants to break down and react to various difficulties. Initiatively, reflection is the establishment of sorting out troublesome circumstances when confronted, it likewise is handily comprehended, if any issue stirred in the work place (usher et al 2008). John (1998), clarifies the depiction of impression of when being confronted with logical inconsistencies permits specialists to survey, think basically and consider their training. What's more reflection is a procedure which permits presence in recognize in the way nursing hypothesis, for instance can. Reflection is psychological corresponding to changes of things we do which isn't a strategy or educational program component. Medical attendants who take part in some type of movement are set out by administrative specialists demonstrate an appropriation with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council, (ANMC). Competency gauges for enlisted medical attendants (2005), in the mid 1990ââ¬â¢s Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council, (ANMC) had first embraced the national competency guidelines for enrolled attendants. Foundation of the association was in 1992, to build up a national way to deal with nursing and Midwifery guideline. To guarantee and convey safe skilled consideration, the (ANMC) cooperated with the state and domain nursing and birthing assistance specialists (NMRAS) to deliver national norm. In connection, to the AHPRAââ¬â¢S Scheme, which became effective of first of July, 2010, the activities are administered by the wellbeing and expert guideline national law Act, 2009 (QLD) and each state and region. What's more with the national plan, duty was taken over for the guideline of medical attendants and birthing assistants in Australia, and taken responsibility for national competency standard for enrolled medical caretakers. The base consideration gauges for a medical attendant in Australia are the 4 spaces arrangements and coordination of care, proficient practice, basic reasoning and examination, shared and helpful practice. The areas of reflections which likewise incorporate self-examination thinking about ones own practices by feeling and convictions and expert turn of events. The spaces have all been set out for the medical caretaker to consider practice, brilliantly and morally (Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council 2008a, 2006). Reflections an action word whic h intends to consider one idea (Hancock 1999). This may review what one thinks and recollections in an intellectual demonstration, for example, outlining distinguishing mistake. (Taylor 2000). Reflection is an action in the direction of an activity before it occurs. (Francis 1995). Rolfe et al (2001), contend that information for training that doesn't originate from course readings or talks. Furthermore they call it logical information that specialists get from regular information, reflection is the way toward estimating about that information. In thought, of the intelligent perspectives on perceiving qualities and shortcomings and my training empowers me to roll out positive improvements to my future practice by utilizing Gibbs Cycle model. Gibbs Reflective Cycle ï⠷ Gibbs model starts with asking what occurred. What was your inclination? This permits me to think what accured at the hour of occasion. ï⠷ What was my job in the circumstance? What was I attempting to accomplish and what move to make? What was the reaction of others and what they thought? We move from the second phase of Gibbs Cycle. ï⠷ What does this enlighten me concerning my patients? What is the model will be model of care I am utilizing? How is my disposition towards the patient? What would it be advisable for me to have done to improve this? Last phase of Gibbs model. ï⠷ What do I have to improve? Question myself about improving patient consideration; extend my insight to improve understanding consideration. End: During my examination I started to recognize the way that basic reflection is basic in nursing to empower to think back words on blunders made in the work place. Gibbs Cycle is the device in thinking about back considerations and activities achieved by medical caretakers. On the off chance that we think back on what we do and how we do it, high consideration of patient consideration can be checked effectively without causing hurt in the work place. (ANMC) grasps all medical caretakers and specialists to participate in some sort of movement to upgrade intelligent deduction as it helps in social occasion pertinent and current data as it is a piece of the enactment. I feel it has struck a chord that basic reflection it is a significant instrument on reflecting ones contemplations. Impression of my job: Critical reflection has information me to look in reverse and consider things we do. It has changed my view of nursing as my insight extended hugely towards my job as a medical caretaker since starting my college degree. I believe I have a duty as an attendant to follow the nursing and birthing assistance committee plan to stay current. sealbendix853http://www.blogger.com/profile/13187115686947894202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3347184956520952365.post-51266109524192045412020-08-22T12:22:00.001-07:002020-08-22T12:22:33.323-07:00Rock-n-roll and the use of drugs in the period between 1955 and 1966 EssayJammin and the utilization of medications in the period somewhere in the range of 1955 and 1966 - Essay Example As the counterculture developed, nonetheless, a related enthusiasm with mind changing medications started to be a piece of the experience. While the period of medication use and free reasoning is regularly thought of as the 1960s, the counterculture started a lot before, originating from the attractive energy of specific people to jazz and society music which was frequently communicated by the individuals who were calling themselves hippies and bohemians. The timeframe somewhere in the range of 1955 and 1966 were vital, be that as it may, as the course of social change additionally observed changes in the manner by which intellectualism was sought after, prompting the heavier utilization of medications during that timespan. In 1966, Grace Slick thought of one of the more notorious melodies that anticipated the association between education, awesome, and the medication culture. Referencing Lewis Carrollââ¬â¢s Alice in Wonderland she composed ââ¬Å"One pill makes you bigger/One pil l makes you little/And the ones that mother gives you/Donââ¬â¢t do anything by any means/Go ask Alice/When sheââ¬â¢s ten feet tallâ⬠(Farber, 2007, p. 62). Simultaneously, there has been a battle between grasping the impacts of medication use and the outcomes of enjoying drugs with an excess of power. Awesome ways of life are both loaded up with the debauchery of sex and medications and written to mirror the winding descending that is taken through the ââ¬â¢looking glassââ¬â¢ when medication misuse takes over oneââ¬â¢s life. One of the more adages about medication use and the early long periods of awesome originated from David Crosby who said ââ¬Å"if you can recall the 60s, you werenââ¬â¢t thereâ⬠, implying the nearby association between the utilization of medications, distraction during use and the transformations of the 1960s which incorporated an elevated level of medication use (Farber, 2007, p. 63). ... 63). Medication misuse and liquor addiction as it was associated with artists didn't start during the 1960s. Where there are elevated levels of imaginative feelings joined with the weights of progress, sedate use and liquor misuse were regularly included. In any case, social gatherings that explicitly adjusted themselves to the utilization of medications was a generally new wonder during the 1950s. The kind of gatherings that were characterized by a kind of intellectualism that was following a portion of the extraordinary authors of the time, just as following ways towards gratification and self guilty pleasures were ââ¬â¢beatniksââ¬â¢ and ââ¬â¢bohemiansââ¬â¢ of the 1950s. The music of jazz and society music, two types that assisted with shaping the structures of awesome, were a kind of music that drew individuals towards it that regularly enjoyed tranquilize use. As indicated by Weinstein (1999), ââ¬Å"the starting sparkles were struck during the 1940s that set the coun terculture on fire with drugs in the 1960sâ⬠(p. 169). When Ardous Huxley composed Doors of Perception in 1954, the counterculture was spurred to look for the ideal high, that state where greatness had happened in which the guarantee of medication use was at last satisfied. Looking to satisfy a type of scholarly goal, the book composed by Huxley gave a structure of comprehension about the idea of brain modifying drug use and the upsides of what one can gain from having taken psyche changing medications. Huxley (2009) portrays what Spanish heros saw when they experienced Native Americans. He states ââ¬Å"they eat a root which they call peyote, and which they worship just as tit was a deityâ⬠(p. 9). You need to make sure that they understand how to be better speakers and teachers in order to learn how to teach them in the future. When it comes to a classroom conversation, your students should know what questions they are allowed to ask their teacher and themselves. If you are not sure of this, take the time to practice with the topics that you are going to cover before the class. It will help you to determine which topics will be more appropriate for your students.Good presentation topics for students will help them to be able to express their thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively. They also give them the ability to think of other ways to help with their lessons. They will then find that they have a lot of fun while learning and being able to express themselves to you.For this reason, if you are unsure as to what kind of topic to use, you can always go back to a good example of what someone said. Check the television and see what kinds of programs are on today. You can also go to the library and check out books from there. These examples will help you get an idea as to what will work well for your students. The second option that you have is to get a book and read a specific example. A good example for you to use for this is when you were a child. What did you do when you were reading a book? It is the same concept when it comes to presenting information to your students.Different types of scenarios can be used for different purposes. You can also use the works of various authors to help you find examples that will work well for the kind of discussion that you are going to have. A great example is Dr. Seuss' 'Green Eggs and Ham.'This particular book has a variety of different types of stories that will work well for any situation. If you find yourself finding these types of examples and actua lly using them in your classroom, you can often find that your students will be much more relaxed about participating in class discussions. This can mean that they will be able to carry out the necessary information and assignments that you give them. The best presentation topics for students can help you make sure that you are able to give them a high quality learning experience. At the beginning of this century, Oklahoma had not been a state for very long and was still considered a part of the frontier. Lewis and Ida Ellison had each grown up in the South to parents who had been slaves. The couple moved out west to Oklahoma hoping the lives of their children would be fueled with a sense of possibility in this state that was reputed for its freedom. Though the prejudices of Texas and Arkansas soon encroached upon Oklahoma, the open spaces and fighting spirit of the people whom Ellison grew up among did provide him with a relatively unbiased atmosphere. The death of Lewisâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Although he received musical training in many instruments as well as theory, he held a high preference for the trumpet and was talented enough to obtain training from the conductor of the Oklahoma City Orchestra. Ellison took part in playing at many concerts, marches, bands, and celebrations for the town. During the midst of this study, he did not lose sight of his desire to be a Renaissance Man, however, and spent time playing football, working at small jobs, and experimenting in electronics. In 1933, Ellison left Oklahoma and headed to the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama to study music, with the help of a scholarship he had won from the state of Oklahoma. One of his music teachers at the school was Hazel Harrison who would later introduce Ellison to Alain Locke, a New Negro thinker, who would lead Ellison to his writing career years later through connections to Langston Hughes and Richard Wright. At Tuskegee, Ellison excelled in his music program as well as taking a particular liking to his sociology and sculpture classes and the outside classroom which Alabama provided. Though not pleased with the desire of the states people, black and white, to categorize him as he had never experienced at home, he did appreciate the chance to raise his own consciousness concerning the rest of the country he lived in. Literature would also influence his say at Tuskegee as he again delved into the expansive libraries at his disposal. SQLite stores a collection of tables in a single file database, usually ending in .db. Each table is like a spreadsheet, it consists of a number of columns and each row has values. If it helps, think of each row as being a struct, with the columns in the table corresponding to theà fields in the struct. A table can have as many rows as will fit on a disk. There is an upper limit but its huge 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 to be precise. A table can have up to 2,000 columns or if you recompile the source, you can max it to an awesome 32,767 columns. The SQLite API To use SQLite, we need to make calls to the API. You can find an introduction to this API on the official Introduction to SQLite C/C Interface web page. Its a collection of functions and easy to use. First, we need a handle to the database. This is of type sqlite3 and is returned by a call to sqlite3_open( filename, **ppDB). After that, we execute the SQL. Lets have a slight digression first though and create a usable database and some tables using SQLiteSpy. (See the previous tutorial for links to that and the SQLite Database Browser). Events and Venues The database about.DB will hold three tables to manage events at several venues. These events will be parties, discos, and concerts and will take place at five venues (alpha, beta, charlie, delta, and echo). When you are modeling something like this, it often helps to start with a spreadsheet. For simplicities sake, Ill just store a date not a time. The spreadsheet has three columns: Dates, Venue, Event Type and about ten events like this. Dates run from 21st to 30th of June 2013. Now SQLite has no explicit date type, so its easier and faster to store it as an int and the same way that Excel uses dates (days since Jan 1, 1900) have int values 41446 to 41455. If you put the dates in a spreadsheet then format the date column as a number with 0 decimal places, it looks something like this: Now we could store this data in one table and for such a simple example, it would probably be acceptable. However good database design practice requires some normalization. Unique data items like venue type should be in its own table and the event types (party etc) should also be in one. Finally, as we can have multiple event types at multiple venues, ( a many to many relationship) we need a third table to hold these. The three tables are: venues - holds all five venueseventtypes - holds all three event typesevents - holds the date plus venue id plus event type id. I also added a description field for this event eg Jims Birthday. The first two tables hold the data types so venues have names alpha to echo. Ive added an integer id as well and created an index for that. With the small numbers of venues (5) and event types (3), it could be done without an index, but with larger tables, it will get very slow. So any column that is likely to be searched on, add an index, preferably integer The SQL to create this is: The index on the events table has date, id-event, the event type, and venue. That means we can query the event table for all events on a date, all events at a venue, all parties etc and combinations of those such as all parties at a venue etc. After running the SQL create table queries, the three tables are created. Note Ive put all that sql in the text file create.sql and it includes data for populating some of the three tables. If you put ; on the end of the lines as Ive done in create.sql then you can batch and execute all the commands in one go. Without the ; you have to run each one by itself. In SQLiteSpy, just click F9 to run everything. Ive also included sql to drop all three tables inside multi-line comments using /* .. */ same as in C. Just select the three lines and do ctrl F9 to execute the selected text. These commands insertà the five venues: Again Ive included commented out text to empty tables, with the delete from lines. Theres no undo so be careful with these! Amazingly, with all the data loaded (admittedly not much) the entire database file on disk is only 7KB. Event Data Rather than build up a bunch of ten insert statements, I used Excel to create a .csv file for the event data and then used the SQLite3 command line utility (that comes with SQLite) and the following commands to import it. Note: Any line with a period (.) prefix is a command. Use .help to view all commands. To run SQL just type it in with no period prefix. You have to use double blackslashes \\ in the import path for each folder. Only do the last line after the .import has succeeded. When SQLite3 runs the default separator is a : so it has to be changed to a comma before the import. Back to the Code Now we have a fully populated database, lets write the C code to run this SQL query which returns a list of parties, with description, dates and venues. New to SQL? Read What is SQL? This does a join using the idvenue column between the events and venues table so we get the name of the venue not its int idvenue value. SQLite C API Functions There are many functions but we only need a handful. The order of processing is: Open database with sqlite3_open(), exit if have error opening it.Prepare the SQL with sqlite3_prepare()Loop using slqite3_step() until no more records(In the loop) process each column with sqlite3_column...Finally call sqlite3_close(db) Theres an optional step after calling sqlite3_prepare where any passed in parameters are bound but well save that for a future tutorial. So in the program listed below the pseudo code for the major steps are: The sql returns three values so if sqlite3.step() SQLITE_ROW then the values are copied from the appropriate column types. Ive used int and text. I display the date as a number but feel free to convert it to a date.ââ¬â¹ Listing of Example Code sealbendix853http://www.blogger.com/profile/13187115686947894202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3347184956520952365.post-38388153864200134542020-05-06T16:09:00.001-07:002020-05-06T16:09:16.789-07:00Analysis Of Henrik Ibsen s A Doll s House - 1523 Words English Literature: A Drop in Parenthood In Henrik Ibsenââ¬â¢s A Dollââ¬â¢s House, the matriarchy and patriarchy presented in the play sets a sense of disarray, as each of the characters had fathers who were ultimately either failures, never present in their lives, or were the failed fatherââ¬â¢s themselves. Although the lack of patriarchy is not a predominant symbol, it is a significant symbol as almost every character is affected. Patriarchy and fatherhood are generally associated with dependence, affection, and trust. However, throughout the play the fathers are proven to be associated with dishonesty, abandonment and overall failure. Nora, the main character, is a key example of having a failure of a father. It means that even though something maybe wrong and untrue if an individual believes it enough it will come to pass. No matter what someone may say, it is hard to change ones opinion because that is what the person truly believes. This is portrayed in William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s play, Macbeth, through the actions of various characters. Shakespeare clearly shows the idea of self-deception through their actions and how this self-deception leads to moral disorder. Macbeth is a play that is all about deception. Right from the beginning when the three witches meet to talk, the mood being nothing is quite as it seems is set when they say ââ¬Å"Fair is fowl and foul is fair, Hover through fog and filthy airâ⬠(I: I: 11-12). This quote makes it seem that something bad is going to happen soon, and it also makes the mood seem dark and sinister. The three witches have a large role in causing characters such as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth to become self-deceit. The three witches know exactly what is going to happen if they tell Macbeth their prophecy, but they decide to tell him in a way that he interprets all wrong, and doesnââ¬â¢t give him much thought for Macbeth. Hecate, the main witch, says to the three witches ââ¬Å"And all you know security is mortals chiefest enemy. â⬠(III: V: 32-33). This means that comfort and over confidence in yourself is the worst thing for you; it will ultimately bring you to your downfall, which is exactly what they are trying to do to Macbeth. Although the witches forced Macbeth to be self-deceit, Lady Macbeth did to. Lady Macbeth is a character that is very good at persuading to get what she wants. She was the one who pushed Macbeth to murder Duncan even when he had his doubts, she made him believe everything would work out and that it was the right thing to do, she made his self-deceit. By saying ââ¬Å"Look like the innocent flower but the serpent under itâ⬠(I: V: 73-74), she is making him go through with the murder and to believe and play it off like it will turn out fine in the end. Even though Lady Macbeth helps to make her husband self-deceit, she too proves to be self-deceit. She acts like she is not affected by the recent events caused by her and her husband but then breaks down. The overwhelming feeling of regret that she keeps trying to play off keeps her from sleeping well and eating normally. During her sleep Lady Macbeth began to talk in her sleep, one of the things she said was that ââ¬Å"all the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. â⬠(V: I: 47). This was showing her guilt towards the murder of Duncan and that she cannot forget about it. Not long after this is said she commits suicide. Macbeth is the character Shakespeare used most to portray his idea of self-deception through. Macbeth was made to be self-deceit because of the witchesââ¬â¢ prophecy that brought him his overconfidence and too much reassurance. But his wife also made him this way. Lady Macbeth questioned his manhood when he wanted to stop and not go through with the plan and made him believe what they were doing should happen and will work out perfectly for them. During the play Macbeth believes what the witches told him. He believes so much that even when everything starts falling apart, he goes back to the witches to see what else they say. He keep thinking that this is whatââ¬â¢s supposed to happen and itââ¬â¢s going to start being better soon. Although Macbeth believes that everything is okay, just like Lady Macbeth he is losing sleep over the guilt. Macbeth began to get sacred of getting caught, so to cover it up he kept murdering people. He started with Duncanââ¬â¢s guards so they couldnââ¬â¢t be able to tell people their story, next was his best friend Banquo because he was afraid Banquo would tell people his suspicions, and then was Macduffs family, trying to get to Macduff but he wasnââ¬â¢t there. After trying so hard to cover everything up, and being so self-deceit Macbeth finally start so see the end and whatââ¬â¢s really coming to them. ââ¬Å"The way to dusty death. Out, out brief candle! Lifeââ¬â¢s but a walking shadow, a poor player That struts and frets his hour upon the stage And then is heard no more: it is a tale Told by an idiot, full sound and fury, signifying nothing. â⬠(V: V: 25-30). This is the quote Macbeth says when he knows whatââ¬â¢s coming for him, but he still proves to be self-deceit by listening to what the witches told him that he cannot be killed by someone born of a women. Macbeth once again thinking heââ¬â¢s invincible doesnââ¬â¢t realize that someone who was born of a caesarean section could kill him, because they are not technically born of a woman. Macbeth did not know Macduff was born like that, and it is why Macduff is the one to kill Macbeth. In summary, self-deception is the human weakness that in the end will bring you to a downfall. Shown through the misleading, greed, and overconfidence of characters, William Shakespeare has shown self-deception the audience and readers of his tragic play Macbeth. This play shows how deception is started and what it does to you, for Macbeth and Lady Macbeth it started out being a good thing, Macbeth was King as we wanted, but everything came back to them and caused them into insanity, leading them both to death. sealbendix853http://www.blogger.com/profile/13187115686947894202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3347184956520952365.post-65018447399621717432020-04-12T10:24:00.001-07:002020-04-12T10:24:03.852-07:00Ethical Dilemma Introduction An ethical dilemma is a situation where people are forced to make a choice between two options available to them. It is necessary to explain that regardless of the option an individual takes both options have negative consequences.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Ethical Dilemma specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More However, the individual chooses an option that have few negative impacts on the event or people involved (Adair 2013). This essay uses an ethical dilemma case study to illustrate the issues involved in this context and how they are managed without causing a lot of harm to all the parties involved. Example of an Ethical Dilemma Engrave Computers is a technology based company that specializes in producing software that enable managers to monitor the performance of employees and predict their productivity. This software also gives companies opportunities to explore various issues that affect the performance of employees and propose solutions to these challenges. I am the manager of this company and Ben has been very influential in developing this software. The company does not demand that employees should hand over their production rights and other patent requirements to it; in fact, it encourages its workers to be creative and invent software that will boost its sales and retain the right to distribute, sell, share or change the particulars of their inventions (Thomas 2010). The company gives workers this privilege to motivate them to continue rendering their services without feeling the company or managers are misusing their talents. The company is registered to take part in an international exhibition where the winner is awarded a quarter of its working capital and offered a free one year advertising space in an international broadcasting channel. I am confident that Ben will make the company proud since he has always won this contest. On the other hand, this company exp erienced significant losses last year because most employees reported to work late or were absent without seeking permission from the human resource management (Pollock 2011).Advertising Looking for essay on ethics? Workers were requested to read the new regulation and append their signatures to show that they agreed on the terms stated by the human resource department. Last week the company secretary was suspended since she failed to observe this regulation and this was a warning that no one will be spared. Ben reported to work yesterday after being absent for four days and claims that he was not feeling well. Everybody is keen watching what will happen to him as pressure continues to pile on the human resource department to ta ke corrective measures against him (Saaty 2011). However, this department felt that this case was beyond its abilities and forwarded the matter to my department. I forwarded the issue to the board of directors but I was directed to solve it within 24 hours. Dilemmas This situation was not as easy as it looked due to the considerations that I had to observe before taking any step. There were challenges regarding all alternatives available to me at that moment. First, being a manager means I had to a stake step that would ensure the operations if the company would not be affected. This means that the operations of the company would go on despite the measures I would have taken. Secondly, I was supposed to show other employees that no one is above the policies of this company and if anyone commits a mistake the individual must be punished. Thirdly, it was necessary to show employees that I was committed to implement the policies regarding lateness and absenteeism (Arthur 2009). The hum an resource department had suspended the secretary and thus I was supposed to follow the same path. Lastly, I was supposed to ensure that the company participates in the oncoming exhibition since it had already confirmed its participation. Ethical Steps The policies of this company were changed to ensure that an employee who comes late is suspended for three months. This was motivated by the poor performance witnessed in the last financial year and no one was willing to experience another financial crisis. Therefore, I suspended Ben for three months to ensure other workers become obedient and follow the regulations provided to them.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Ethical Dilemma specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The following are ethical considerations that guided me to take this step. This decision was motivated by the need to ensure that no one commits this mistake against regardless of the position of an indi vidual in the company (Haberfeld 2012). Ben was an indispensable employee but his actions were considered to have economic, legal and social impacts on the company and other workers. First, the suspended secretary would have complained of double standards if I would have ignored suspending Ben. This would have led to a legal tussle between her and the company. Secondly, other workers would have noticed that Ben was not punished and this could crate differences among them (McCarthy 2011). Thirdly, I knew that we were going to miss the prestigious prize on the scheduled event; however, this was not as important as other activities of this company. In addition, the occasion is held after every five years and this means that it would have significant impacts on this company. Therefore, my decision was economically responsible since it focused on the long term gains the company will make if employees are punctual and attend all activities as the company directed them (Baaske 2009). The c ompany will never make losses due to absenteeism or lateness even though it was going to miss the award. In addition, it was ethical since it showed that I was promoting professional discipline in the company. It is advisable to follow the rules and policies regarding work to ensure that workers respect with them without favoring some workers (Farrell 2012). The decision also promoted respect for the rule of justice and equality at the company. It is necessary to explain that the secretary was suspended after failing to meet the requirements of the company; therefore, it would have been very unfair to exempt Ben from punishments yet they are all employees of this company. Even though, I had the option of punishing him after his presentation this was not a logical alternative since it was bound to affect him during that period (Harrison 2010). Therefore, my decision was appropriate and I will hot hesitate to suspend another worker in case the individual violates the policies of this company.Advertising Looking for essay on ethics? It is necessary to ensure that they make informed choices and if possible they should consult their friends before taking any step. These dilemmas put our faith and commitments to test; therefore, they should be approached very carefully. Due to the fact that the selection process consists in soliciting all possible information about the candidates to assess their suitability for a particular organization, it is very sophisticated, creating a solid platform for matching the recruits with the organizational staff.Advertising We will write a custom assessment sample on The Major Aspects of Organizationââ¬â¢s Resourcing Strategies specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Therefore, the strictness of approaches to selecting people is vital because negligence of specific criteria can lead to negative consequences. In addition, managers should be aware of the fact that selection process should effectively supported by the technological innovation because inaccuracy of the information delivered can lead to failure of choosing the appropriate candidate, as it happened to Liverpool Direct, a leading service company located in London (Bocij, Greasely and Hickie, p. 128). The chief executive David McElinney realized the major problem and managed to eliminate the problem, but the losses were still inevitable. Managing Diversity Cultural diversity is identified a concept demanding serious change to all spheres of organizational activities in order to ensure that various strategies and characteristics of human resources are highly appreciated. The effectiveness of successful diversity management is evident, specifically when it comes to enhanced creativity and innovation, better comprehension of customersââ¬â¢ needs, and improved recruitment opportunities. More positive moral and greater employee retention are also the outcomes of fruitful introduction of consistent diversity management. One of brightest examples of appropriate diversity management is Pacific Dunlop, a large Aust ralian company that acknowledges the explicit connection between poor moral and negligence of social and cultural backgrounds (Steger and Erwee, n. d., p. 78). The company strictly embraces diversity management strategies and successfully contributes to employee retention. In addition, the companyââ¬â¢s person-oriented strategy positively influences the organizational performance as well because workers are more likely to favor the business activities in healthier environments. Human Resource Development On the one hand, straight course on identifying the goals and achieving the results is one of the conditions for successful business management. On the other hand, excessive focus on achievements can lead to a stressful and unhealthy situation within an employed environment.Advertising Looking for assessment on business economics? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Consequently, a good manager should be able to stri ke the balance between those orientations and create a harmonious, two-polar approach in the sphere of human resource management and development. Case study of Wall-Mart proves that inappropriate human resource management can lead to serious consequences for organizational productivity and performance. Specifically, labor right violations and reluctance of managerial staff to introduce changes to treating their personnel negatively affected the companyââ¬â¢s image and performance. Assessing HRM Effectiveness Inability to treat the employees effectively can put the effectiveness of human resource management in question. Failure to introduce trustful and reliable relationships between the members of an organization can have a negative impact on the organizational performance. Traditionally, HR professionals perceive employee morale and commitment from conceptual viewpoint. However, in order to fulfill the role of HR agent effectively, concepts and theories should be substituted wit h evidence and practice. Inability to introduce effective human resource strategies were also observed in a leading document management company Xerox. The problem is that the company had significant problems in terms of work culture and leadership that occurred during the tenure of Rick Thoman and Paul Allaire. People problems were specifically connected with wrong decision made by the managers in terms of sales force reorganization that was less prioritized. Therefore, the industry personal should have been more concentrated on the organizational goals rather than on the needs of individual customers, which resulted in the companyââ¬â¢s decline. Regarding the discussions presented above, it should be stressed that the HR practitioners presented in the case were part of the problems related to the job analysis, recruitment, and human resource management assessment and development.Advertising We will write a custom assessment sample on The Major Aspects of Organizationâ⠬â¢s Resourcing Strategies specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In particular, a monopolistic view on the business strategy did not provide results for the investment house Foy and Pirelli because the company did not succeed in meeting the employeesââ¬â¢ needs. Managers strongly ignored their initiative; instead, they were more focused on their goals. In addition, the case with MoneyPenny proves that considering cultural and social background is crucial for the success of business operations. Therefore, before initiating the project in Bangkok, the manager should think more carefully over the appropriate candidature for the business journey. The next issue related to human resource management is the development and advancement of techniques aimed at improving working conditions and settling a more favorable emotional climate within an organization. In other words, managers should strike the balance between person-oriented and goal-oriented p olicies being the major conditions for reaching high management performance. In this respect, the case with Steve Lambert proves that aggressive polices deprived of organizational moral will not contribute to positive results and achievement on the part of the employees. Similar to this case, the managers from the investment house Foy and Pirelli also failed to follow the above recommendations and did take into account individual needs as the leading in reaching high level of organizational performance. They were, therefore, part of the problem in this situation. There were also the parties that positively contributed to the management performance, like Mike Burnett, a new manager of Foy and Pirelli who managed to solve the problem with low management performance through cultural revolution. In whole, most of the cases prove incompetence of managers in dealing with human resource management. References Bocij, P., Greaseley, A., and Hickie, S. (2009). This paper provides an empirical description of the Social Exchange Theory, a theoretical explanation of the phenomenon, and a critical evaluation of the validity and utility of the theoretical explanation. There is an empirical description of the Social Exchange Theory, which begins with the concept of knowledge sharing. Knowledge sharing is an important goal of interpersonal communication at organizations, because it can yield competitive advantages (Wu et al. 84). Nonetheless, organizations do not always exert adequate effort to develop mechanisms that successfully persuade employees to share knowledge (Wu et al. 84). Knowledge is precious and knowledge-sharing behavior is an example of social exchange in the workplace (Wu et al. 84). People who have the knowledge do not always feel free to s hare them, unless there are perceived benefits in doing so, which is a fundamental argument of the Social Exchange Theory. ... ndividual altruismâ⬠and ââ¬Å"a social interaction environment.â⬠The sampling came from Taiwanese high-tech industries, particularly research and development (R&D) teams. Finding showed that employeesââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"perceived interpersonal trust,â⬠from colleagues or supervisor, was found to be positively associated with their propensity to share knowledge (91). Employeesââ¬â¢ altruism is also a trait that affected the tendency to share knowledge in the workplace and altruism also lessened the association between trust of colleagues and knowledge sharing (91). Furthermore, an ââ¬Å"organizational social interaction environmentâ⬠improves the positive association between trust of colleagues and knowledge sharing (91). Hence, trust is critical to knowledge sharing or the formation of some of the basic interpersonal relations that organizations require to become competitive. Whitener et al. explored the kinds of behavior managers may perform to build trust. Th ey used the agency and social exchange theories and proposed an exchange relationship framework that recognizes organizational, relational, and individual factors that support or restrain managerial trustworthy behavior. Their model argued for the importance of trust in creating strong and knowledge-sharing relationships. The empirical research showed that the social exchange theory is grounded on trust and from trust and expectations of benefits, positive social exchange can occur. A theoretical explanation of the phenomenon will further help understand the social exchange theory. The social exchange theory, as developed by Blau in 1964, states that an individual may seek to create an exchange relationship with others by willingly giving benefits to others first and then expecting some level of return in the future (Wu et al. sealbendix853http://www.blogger.com/profile/13187115686947894202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3347184956520952365.post-71510033264721276882020-02-07T03:23:00.001-08:002020-02-07T03:23:02.481-08:00Research article Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 wordsResearch article - Essay Example The study also assessed the environmental conditions in the emergency nursesââ¬â¢ work environment so as to determine the possibility of these two factors affecting each other. The results indicate that 52 per cent of nurses in an emergency department in Ireland experience high levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation, which are significantly related to the nature of their work environment. Quantitative research is often used in researches conducted in the healthcare sector because it tends to produce reliable as well as factual results. After the cases of nurse burnout have been documented, for instance, quantitative research allows for the numeric records of the findings to function as an indication of the reality in larger emergency nurse populations in medical facilities. I have actually missed you a lot. The other day, I took a road trip with my parents and I thought of you. I remembered how you told me you wanted me to burn a CD with music for you. Thus, I listened to my iPod the whole way and selected many cool songs that I think you would like. Please get back to me and tell me which ones you liked and all. Also, I know you told me to only put around 10 songs but I could not contain myself and I chose 16 of them. I hope you will like them, because to tell you the truth all of these songs kill me. The first song I chose to put in the CD is 3 Cigarettes by The Sleeping. Besides the beat and instruments that are cool as hell, the lyrics really remind me of you. First of all, there are the obvious connections to cigarettes, which seem to be one of your passions. Also when he says I have been drinking more and eating less reminds me of you. It is pretty much all that you have done lately, smoked, drank, and thought of Jane. Just remember that just like they say we dont have to blame ourselves you should not blame yourself for everything that has been happening. Finally, the line Do you care? Are you there? Are you listening? kills me and I am sure it will kill you too. It is calling for peoples attentions, it is calling all those phonies and it makes me wonder if anyone really cares about me. I am sure it will make you feel the same way too. The next song I chose was Through the Glass by Stone Sour. I think that this song is talking about an insider who became a stranger and now they are looking from the outside back in. This makes me think of you because many times throughout your life you have alienated yourself. You just look from the outside as time passes by and sometimes you feel like going back in, and being an insider again but you dont. The phrase Im looking at you through the glass; dont know how much time is passed. Oh God it feels like forever makes me think of you a lot. Because you are always thinking about how quickly time passes by. It seems like you have been alienating yourself for a long time now, it feels like forever. The next song on your CD is Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton. I just had to add this one. I know that you are really sensitive about your brothers death and all, and you dont like talking about it. However, I think that the sooner you face reality the better it will be for you and everyone. This song was made for his son who died. He was very meaningful to Eric Clapton just like your brother Allie was to you. I know you so well, that I am sure that you have wondered about many of the things that this song is stressing about. Such as if Allie would remember your name, and if it would all be the same. Also, there is a bigger picture to it. I remember about an specific conversation with your sister Phoebe you told me about. She asked you to name one thing you really liked and you said you really liked Allie. I think you should listen to lines such as Cause I know I dont belong here in heaven and Cause I know I just cant stay here in heaven. The bigger picture that these lines are showing and I am trying to prove to you is that as much as you love Allie you have to let him go. You are both in different worlds now, and wherever he is, you dont belong there. At least not yet. Holden, you should really get on with your life and just keep with you all of the good memories you have with Allie but let him go. It is the best thing to do. I am sure you will enjoy quite a lot the next song I picked out for you. It is a classic by the great band Pink Floyd. This one is called Another Brick in the Wall. You might have heard of it already. The meaning of the song is to say that in school they treat us all the same and they do not respect that everyone is a separate and different individual. Pink Floyd is saying that this is all false control and they are putting all the students together and trying to make them all the same, therefore losing their individualities. I can tell that you will agree with these lines, and that they will really kill you. When they say All in all its just another brick in the wall, the meaning is that every single one of us students are just a tiny brick of the wall of hypocrisy, superficiality, and shallowness that they are trying to build. They are the ones that you every so often refer to as the phonies. That is what I think this song is criticizing, phonies who try to make everyone be the same. They try to make everyone be like them. Hopefully there are still people out there, like me and you, who are going to fight this and knock down this wall of phonies. The next song I picked is called Boys Dont Cry by The Cure. It makes me think of you and Jane. When I listen to it, I think of how you like Jane so much and she is the only girl that you truly care about but you wont tell her. Just like the song is describing, you often say I would You mention things that you would do, such as give her a buzz, and visit her, and ask her on a date. However, you never do any of it. The line boys dont cry is obviously making a critic to some boys like you, who would rather hide their feelings and appearing tough instead of telling the truth and possibly crying. I love the line I try and laugh about it hiding the tears in my eyes and the one I try to laugh about it; cover it all up with lies. Both of these lines are very strong. They also show things that you do. You often act all nonchalant and like giving Jane a buzz is just something you would do any day. However, I think it is much deeper than that. You are scared of being rejected by her because she is the only one you care about. So, you just act casual and cool about it and lie and hide your feels for her. The next song, The Permanent Rain by The Dangerous Summer follows the same line as the one before. I think that just like the singer is saying, I wont let this die, you shouldnt let what you have with Jane die. You and her both have a really strong connection and bond. I think it would be very sad if you did not do anything about it. I think you should go and tell her how you feel. It is really the best thing to do. When he says, I know its not helping to hear me say: I wish it was me in the car the other day really makes me think of you as well. Even though you have never actually told her about it, you have wondered for a long time about her and Stradlater in his teachers car. You wonder about what happened and you cannot help but wish that it were you with her in the car instead of Stradlater. Finally, when the line You know it meant a lot, but I was just a kid comes up it seems like it was written for you. You were both too young to fully understand the connection that you both h ad. Now, I think you are old and mature enough to understand it and your relationship with Jane should mean even more if you tell her how you feel. The next song, however, is not about Jane. It is about High School, hence the name High School Low by Say Anything. Just like you, the guy in the song is sixteen. He is also worrying about things such as the whole high school experience, and girls. I find there is even a connection to you when he says, My teacher says that Im brilliant. It reminds me of how Mr. Spencer would try and get the best out of you. He did not say you were brilliant, however, he acknowledge that you had so much more potential than the one you were showing with your poor grades and test scores. The passage about looking at pictures of himself when he was a child can also be compared to you. I know that you have often thought about how it is such a horrible experience having to grow up and all, but we will get to this topic later. To do with the whole grades issue, he also says My grades look pretty damn low. I want to motivate myself, but how the hell am I supposed to work. This is something that is so similar to you that it could have come out of your mouth. At the same time that you realize that your grades are low and you need to make an effort, you dont know how to. You are confused about what you should do that would motivate yourself. I remember you told me that when your psychoanalyst asked you if you would apply yourself when you got back to school in September you said you did not know. I mean of course you want to, but as you said it yourself, you are not able to tell how you are going to behave. One phrase that is constantly repeated is take me away. Just like you, this boy wants to run away from these high school days and from all the phoniness and move on to a better part of life; be it the past or the future. Speaking of phonies, this is what my next chosen song is about. It is called Mutiny! by Set Your Goals. This song is clearly criticizing people. In my opinion, it is criticizing the phonies. What leads me to think this way is when things such as superior, you are inferior and heroes have betrayed are said. This is talking about people who think that they are better than other s when they really are nothing special. It is also talking about how people can just betray you and change all of the sudden. Finally, the line I will find the line and cross it every time reminds me of you. It reminds me of how you many times alienate yourself as a form of protection. Therefore, I think that crossing the line is a symbol for you of that crazy red hunting hat you wear. You wear it to prove your point and to show people that you dont care and youre fine with being different. This is nothing else but a way of crossing the line. The next song I chose is called Flake and it is by Jack Johnson. In case you dont know, a flake is someone who says that they will go somewhere or do something and then they dont. Am I the only one who sees a resemblance here to you?! Yes, I am going to start talking about Jane again. You seriously have to stop saying that you will call her, unless you are actually planning on doing it. Otherwise, you are just flaking. The strong line It seems to me that maybe pretty much always means no is what I feel sometimes when you start talking to me about her. You say that you might call her if you feel like it. Now, I am starting to see it as something you just have to say to feel good about yourself, to show that you have the power to call her. I think you should not flake Jane. Besides that, it is a great song and I really love the instrumental and the beat for it. I am sure you will love it too! The next song I picked is a slow one. I find it truly beautiful. It is called Cannonball by Damien Rice. It is also a love song. What I think it is talking about is about someone whom he really loves but that he cannot be with for a reason or another. He talks about how he remembers the girl all the time, and the things that remind him of her. I think that the way he feels about this girl is just like how you feel about Jane. It reminds me of how you remember her because of little things such as how she always kept her kings on the back. This song also brings up the issue you have of lying and it claims that the issues he had to face in life when dealing with love are the ones that made him be like that. It also reminds me of you when he mentions that It is not hard to fall when you float like a cannonball because you can often be very heavy and therefore you sink into your issues like a cannonball sinking down in an ocean. My favorite like on this song, however, has to be the last one. It says when you know that you just dont know. I think it is talking about when people are confused and how it takes courage, to even admit that you are lost. Speed of Sound by Coldplay is also sort of a slow song. The main point to this song is that it is talking about time. I think that Coldplay is trying to show how everything moves so fast, like the speed of sound. Time goes by too quickly, Holden. I know you have already realized that before, considering how you have told me countless times and made me notice that once we notice everything has already happened. This song could have been sung by someone who is waiting on a platform and they are noticing how fast things happen. It also talks about the issues we all have with dealing with this fast-moving time. Be prepared because this next song I am about to introduce to you will kill you. I am serious. It is called Forever Young and it is by Alphaville. It is impossible for me to listen to it and not think of you. The main point to this song is the fact that we all get old. The singer obviously wants to be forever young just like you! You tend to resist the natural process of maturity and growing up. It seems like you want to be forever young without having any responsibilities or having to deal with any problems of adulthood. I think this is mostly because you are scared. You are scared of what awaits for you, and it all sort of mystify you. That is why you invent that you do not want to be an adult because it is a world of phoniness. It is your way of running away from the fact that you are actually scared of growing up because you do not have a clue of what any of it is like. A line on this song that I find really interesting is Some are like water, some are like the heat, some are a melody and some are the beat. I think that this line is talking about the people that make our life what it is. The people that are there for us. I think that water is a symbol for the people that are a bit colder and the heat for the ones who are warm. The people who are a melody are the ones, like Jane, who come every once in a while and they completely change how you were before, just like the melody of a song. The melodies of someones life are not always there, but we can never be the same after they leave. Finally, the beat is a symbol for the people who are there to support you in your life constantly, just like the beat in a song. It is also impossible to be the same without the beats of our life, such as Phoebe, because they are the ones that we can call whenever we need. I think you will really enjoy the next song I picked. It is called Marching Bands of Manhattan by Death Cab for Cutie. First of all, the main reason of why it reminds me of you is the whole New York experience. I know how much that city describes you. I am sorry but I will have to bring old Jane up once again. I think that this song is mostly talking about how he wants to be with someone that doesnt know how they feel. I think that this is your type of song, and I hope you will like it. If you like it, you should look up more songs by Death Cab for Cutie, they all send like this and have wonderful lyrics. Well, this is pretty much all, I hope you enjoyed the songs I chose and you will take some of the advice I gave you. Remember to get back to me and tell me what you thought of them. Oh! Also, I hope you like the cover for the CD! I know how crazy you have been about those ducks on Central Park and I just thought you would enjoy that. Love, Deb P.S. The two other songs I added were songs I found searching on the internet that were inspired by The Catcher in the Rye and I thought that they would be interesting to add. sealbendix853http://www.blogger.com/profile/13187115686947894202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3347184956520952365.post-71528273566809657012020-01-21T00:25:00.001-08:002020-01-21T00:25:03.258-08:00Telling It Like It Is Essay -- Essays PapersTelling It Like It Is ââ¬Å"My country, right or wrong,â⬠is a thing that no patriot would think of saying except in a desperate case. It is like saying, ââ¬Å"My mother, drunk or sober.â⬠ââ¬âG. K. Chesterton, The Defendant These are indeed desperate times. On September 11, 2001, America witnessed the worst act of terrorism in U.S. history. Grief-stricken, angry, and shocked, people from all over America came together in the face of tragedy and solidly affirmed their pride in the U.S.A. The outpouring of patriotism that resulted from this tragedy was astonishing. Our country came together: specific agendas were swept aside in favor of partisanship and overwhelming support for our leaders, for our institutions, for our democracy. Picking up on this trend, the media, typically a primary conveyer of culture in America, soon adopted a positive attitude towards the government. Patriotic bias, in part because of the public demand, began dictating broadcasts. In fact, the pendulum swung far over to the radical side: the media by and large accepted governmental censorship requests, ceased to question our leaders, and even began censoring their interviews, handling our nationââ¬â¢s institutions with velvet gloves. We championed our country, with its ideals of freedom and democracy, and in the process lost a part of our freedom and democracy. Governmental Controls Taking advantage of the patriotic fever sweeping the nation, the federal government began making ââ¬Å"requestsâ⬠of the media, asking them to censor their coverage of particular events, or to withhold information regarding the government from the public. These requests were not particularly surprising. What was startling was the by and large acceptance of these reque... ...San Francisco Chronicle, 6 Jan. 2002: D4. 7. ââ¬Å"Day,â⬠D4. 8. In William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s tragedy, Julius Caesar, he focuses on the actions and results in the play that occur in a domino effect, with characters that set forth events that lead to great suffering. In Julius Caesar, Cassius is the tragic figure who contributes to the vision of the conspirators as a whole, but through the ââ¬Å"divine lighting,â⬠matters could not be helped.Cassiusââ¬â¢s personality leads to his, and many others, fatal downfall. Cassiusââ¬â¢s is seen as the leader of the conspirators, the manipulative master behind the cruel plan. He, with many others, disdain Caesar for his arrogance, yet Cassius encompasses the same exact trait. His arrogance is shown in Act I, when he and Brutus are talking, and Cassius notices the unease in Brutusââ¬â¢ eyes when they believe Caesar is crowned. He says, ââ¬Å"I was born as free as Ca esar,â⬠(1. 2, 104).In this speech Cassius is trying to convey the idea that Brutus is as good as Caesar so that Brutus will be more inclined to join the conspiracy, but Cassius uses the first comparison of Caesar to explain that Caesar is no better than he. His cunning, manipulative nature bleeds through in his very first speech, his arrogance is clearly shown and his motives laid down. Cassiusââ¬â¢ jealousy leads to his revulsion of Caesar. Only Caesarââ¬â¢s death being the answer to Cassiusââ¬â¢ insecurities. The cunning manipulation Cassius practices affects everybody in the play.Cassius manipulation so purely spoken by Brutus when he proclaims, ââ¬Å"What dangers would you lead me, Cassius/That you would have me seek into myself/ For that which is not in me? â⬠(1. 2, 69-71). Brutusââ¬â¢ jealousy of Caesar had not yet progressed to the level of malevolence, but as Brutus said Cassius spurns him on selfishly to mold him into what benefits him the most. Brut us is troubled at first, unsure what to do, and his odd behavior aggravates Portia, causing her to grieve because of the knowledge she does not know.Once the conspiracy is revealed to her she becomes edgy, and the arrival of Octavius sends her into a fit of stress which ends with her swallowing ââ¬Å"fire. â⬠Caesarââ¬â¢s death is the main source of suffering, but Caesars anguish is not because of his death. His suffering is revealed in the moments before he dies, he utters the most memorable line in history, he cries, ââ¬Å"Et tu Brute? â⬠(3. 1, 85). This is the cause of Caesarââ¬â¢s complete death, the death of not just his body but of his trust.Caesar could handle the betrayal of the other senators, because that is politics, but the betrayal of someone he viewed as a friend, someone he loved, destroyed him. Antonyââ¬â¢s speech, causing the most wide spread wave of despair, leads the Romans to exclaim, ââ¬Å"O noble Caesar! / O woeful day! . . . We will be r evenged,â⬠(3. 2, 211-214). Their anger then leads to the suffering of many, even the innocent, as is exampled with the Poet Cinnaââ¬â¢s death. The pristine control Cassius prides himself with, slips and turns Cassius into anything but the victor in this war of superiority. After Caesarââ¬â¢s death Brutus becomes the leading face of the conspirators, leaving Cassius without even the pride of that small feat. Brutus becomes the leading face of the conspirators so now Cassius cannot even pride himself with that. When Cassius and Brutus fight, thinking the other has deceived them, Cassius falters, ââ¬Å"Cassius is aweary of the worldââ¬â/ Hated by the ones he loves, braved by his brother/ . . . / Strike as thou didst at Caesar, for I know/ When thou didst hate him worst, thou I lovedst him better/ Than ever thou lovedst Cassius,â⬠(4. , 106-119). Cassius jealousy still remains, despite Caesarââ¬â¢s death. The feeling of unworthiness still runs deep, he feels like he still canââ¬â¢t compare to Caesar and it is tearing him apart. In the end though, through another misunderstanding, Cassius believes that the battle has been lost and his close friend, Titinius has been captured, he exclaims, ââ¬Å"O coward that I am to live so long/ To see my best friend taââ¬â¢en before my face! â⬠(5. 3, 36-37). Ironically as Caesar has lost his best friend so has Cassius, which leads to his conflicted death. In the end Cassius is the conductor of his own suffering. It was Frye who wisely proclaimed that the tragic heroes seem the inevitable conductors of power, yet they become the both the instrument and victim of the ââ¬Å"divine lighting. â⬠Cassius is seen as the leader of the conspirators leading him to contribute to the vision of the conspirators as a whole, but through his choices he causes the suffering of many including himself. Revenge is bittersweet. sealbendix853http://www.blogger.com/profile/13187115686947894202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3347184956520952365.post-3700217522755662282020-01-04T17:11:00.001-08:002020-01-04T17:11:03.834-08:00Decisions to Drop the Bombs on Japan Essay - 872 Words Decisions to Drop the Bombs on Japan War in itself is an atrocity, to kill or be killed in the name of whatever government chooses to go to war over. Taking lives in order to save lives is the most outrageous oxymoron ever heard, yet during the end of WWII taking the lives of Japanese people saved America from fighting on home soil. Many factors play a role in the final decision to drop the atomic warheads on Americas enemy, yet in the end after all is said and done America was simply defending her land and right for freedom. America was under attack in a war fought on foreign soil. No one wanted the war to be brought on American soil and all Americans wanted the war to be over to assure safety of the American people. The atomicâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Next they saw a giant pillar of purple fire, ten thousand feet high, shooting skyward with enormous speed. (233-4) The atomic bomb had such an excess amount of energy it makes one question the reason or absolute need to use such tremendous force. May be slightly too much power than should be needed. Living as a civilian in Hiroshima on the dark day of August 6 1945 would be the most frightening thing to imagine. First an amazing brilliant flash drawing attention as if a new sun is birthed with a core bursting heat in every direction. The bomb erupted into a fireball fifteen meters in diameter within a tenth of a millisecond emitting temperatures of nearly three hundred thousand degrees Centigrade (Laurduy). Doom is a certainty and a tragic event subdued by the effects of war. It is easy to say we should have dropped the bomb as outsiders. Taking the facts and coming to the most logical conclusion, yet how many would say the bomb was necessary that were near the bomb and experienced the destruction and decay the bomb brought to the land? Not very many. John Herseys Hatsuyo Nakamura was written about survivors of the atomic blast in Hiroshima. The second of four sons, he moved with his family to Derryfield (Manchester) at age eight. Educated locally, Stark learned frontier skills such as lumbering, farming, trapping, and hunting from his father. He first came to prominence in April 1752 when he, his brother William, David Stinson, and Amos Eastman embarked on a hunting trip along the Baker River. Abenaki Captive During the course of the trip, the party was attacked by a group of Abenaki warriors. While Stinson was killed, Stark fought the Native Americans allowing William to escape. When the dust settled, Stark and Eastman were taken prisoner and forced to return with the Abenaki. While there, Stark was made to run a gauntlet of warriors armed with sticks. In the course of this trial, he grabbed a stick from an Abenaki warrior and commenced attacking him. This spirited action impressed the chief and after demonstrating his wilderness skills, Stark was adopted into the tribe.à Remaining with the Abenaki for part of the year, Stark studied their customs and ways. Eastman and Stark were later ransomed by a party sent from Fort No. 4 in Charlestown, NH. The cost of their release was $103 Spanish dollars for Stark and $60 for Eastman. After returning home, Stark planned a trip to explore the headwaters of the Androscoggin River the following year in an attempt to raise money to offset the cost of his release. Successfully completing this endeavor, he was selected by the General Court of New Hampshire to lead an expedition to explore the frontier. This moved forward in 1754 after word was received that the French were building a fort in northwest New Hampshire. Directed to protest this invasion, Stark and thirty men departed for the wilderness. Though they did find any French forces, they did explore the upper reaches of the Connecticut River. French Indian War With the beginning of the French Indian War in 1754, Stark began to contemplate military service. Two years later he joined Rogers Rangers as a lieutenant. An elite light infantry force, the Rangers performed scouting and special missions in support of British operations on the northern frontier. In January 1757, Stark played a key role at the Battle on Snowshoes near Fort Carillon. Having been ambushed, his men established a defensive line on a rise and provided cover while the rest of Rogers command retreated and joined their position. With the battle going against the rangers, Stark was sent south through heavy snow to bring reinforcements from Fort William Henry. The following year, the rangers took part in the opening stages of the Battle of Carillon. Briefly returning home in 1758 following his fathers death, Stark began courting Elizabeth Molly Page. The two were married on August 20, 1758 and ultimately had eleven children. The following year, Major General Jeffery Amherst ordered the rangers to mount a raid against the Abenaki settlement of St. Francis which had long been a base for raids against the frontier. As Stark had adopted family from his captivity in the village he excused himself from the attack. Leaving the unit in 1760, he returned to New Hampshire with the rank of captain. Peacetime Settling in Derryfield with Molly, Stark returned to peacetime pursuits. This saw him acquire a substantial estate in New Hampshire. His business efforts were soon hampered by a variety of new taxes, such as the Stamp Act and Townshend Acts, which quickly brought the colonies and London into conflict. With the passage of the Intolerable Acts in 1774 and occupation of Boston, the situation reached a critical level. The American Revolution Begins Following the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775 and the start of the American Revolution, Stark returned to military service. Accepting the colonelcy of the 1st New Hampshire Regiment on April 23, he quickly mustered his men and marched south to join the Siege of Boston. Establishing his headquarters in Medford, MA, his men joined thousands of other militiamen from around New England in blockading the city. On the night of June 16, American troops, fearing a British thrust against Cambridge, moved onto the Charlestown Peninsula and fortified Breeds Hill. This force, led by Colonel William Prescott, came under attack the next morning during the Battle of Bunker Hill. With British forces, led by Major General William Howe, preparing to attack, Prescott called for reinforcements. Responding to this call, Stark and Colonel James Reed rushed to the scene with their regiments. Arriving, a thankful Prescott gave Stark the latitude to deploy his men as he saw fit. Assessing the terrain, Stark formed his men behind a rail fence to the north of Prescotts redoubt on top of the hill. From this position, they repulsed several British attacks and inflicted heavy losses on Howes men. As Prescotts position faltered as his men ran out of ammunition, Starks regiment provided cover as they withdrew from the peninsula. When General George Washington arrived a few weeks later, he was quickly impressed with Stark. Continental Army In early 1776, Stark and his regiment were accepted into the Continental Army as the 5th Continental Regiment. Following the fall of Boston that March, it moved south with Washingtons army to New York. After aiding in bolstering the citys defenses, Stark received orders to take his regiment north to reinforce the American army that was retreating from Canada. Remaining in northern New York for much of the year, he returned south in December and rejoined Washington along the Delaware. Reinforcing Washingtons battered army, Stark took part in the morale-boosting victories at Trenton and Princeton later that month and in early January 1777. At the former, his men, serving in Major General John Sullivans division, launched a bayonet charge at the Knyphausen regiment and broke their resistance. With the conclusion of the campaign, the army moved into winter quarters at Morristown, NJ and much of Starks regiment departed as their enlistments were expiring. Controversy To replace the departed men, Washington asked Stark to return to New Hampshire to recruit additional forces. Agreeing, he left for home and began enlisting fresh troops. During this time, Stark learned that a fellow New Hampshire colonel, Enoch Poor, had been promoted to brigadier general. Having been passed over for promotion in the past, he was incensed as he believed Poor was a weak commander and lacked a successful record on the battlefield. In the wake of Poors promotion, Stark immediately resigned from the Continental Army though he indicated that he would serve again if New Hampshire was threatened. That summer, he accepted a commission as a brigadier general in the New Hampshire militia, but stated that he would only take the position if he was not answerable to the Continental Army. As the year progressed, a new British threat appeared in the north as Major General John Burgoyne prepared to invade south from Canada via the Lake Champlain corridor. Bennington After assembling a force of around 1,500 men at Manchester, Stark received orders from Major General Benjamin Lincoln to move to Charlestown, NH before joining the main American army along the Hudson River. Refusing to obey the Continental officer, Stark instead began operating against the rear of Burgoynes invading British army. In August, Stark learned that a detachment of Hessians intended to raid Bennington, VT. Moving to intercept, he was reinforced by 350 men under Colonel Seth Warner. Attacking the enemy at the Battle of Bennington on August 16, Stark badly mauled the Hessians and inflicted over fifty percent casualties on the enemy. The victory at Bennington boosted American morale in the region and contributed to key triumph at Saratoga later that fall. Promotion At Last For his efforts at Bennington, Stark accepted reinstatement into the Continental Army with the rank of brigadier general on October 4, 1777. In this role, he served intermittently as commander of the Northern Department as well as with Washingtons army around New York. In June 1780, Stark took part in the Battle of Springfield which saw Major General Nathanael Greene hold off a large British attack in New Jersey. Later that year, he sat on Greenes board of inquiry which investigated the betrayal of Major General Benedict Arnold and convicted British spy Major John Andre. With the end of the war in 1783, Stark was called to Washingtons headquarters where he was personally thanked for his service and given a brevet promotion to major general. Returning to New Hampshire, Stark retired from public life and pursued farming and business interests. In 1809, he declined an invitation to attend a reunion of Bennington veterans due to ill health. Though unable to travel, he sent a toast to be read at the event which stated, Live free or die: Death is not the worst of evils. The first part, Live Free or Die, was later adopted as the state motto of New Hampshire. Living to the age of 94, Stark died on May 8, 1822 and was buried in Manchester. sealbendix853http://www.blogger.com/profile/13187115686947894202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3347184956520952365.post-79306816471030737522019-12-19T09:26:00.001-08:002019-12-19T09:26:03.899-08:00Defining Shylock from William Shakespeares The Merchant... Defining Shylock from William Shakespeares The Merchant of Venice For hundreds of years, the Jews had lived in their ancestral home- Palestine- but when they were exiled in about the year 400AD, they scattered throughout Europe and formed a Diaspora: a community of exiled people. When the Roman Empire deteriorated, many of the Jews returned to Palestine, and were ruled by the Turks, then the British, eventually got their own state in 1946. In 1066, when Jews came over to Britain with William the conqueror, they had to wear yellow bands to distinguish them: this was highly discriminating and many Jews were even blamed in murder cases where Christian children were involved, meaning that many Jewsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The overall mistreatment of Shylock and other Jews throughout the play is quite evident. When Shylock is talking to Antonio, he says: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦Suffââ¬â¢rance is the badge of all our tribe; you call me misbeliever, cut-throat dog, and spit upon my Jewish gabardineâ⬠Also, in the courtroom scene, even the judge, who is supposed to represent justice and fairness, is biased against him-he says to Antonio, ââ¬Å"I feel sorry for thee; thou art come to answer a stony adversaryâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ This shows the magnitude of the prejudice against Jews at the time in Venice. Shylockââ¬â¢s attitude to money is one of greed. He obsesses about the amount of money he has, and seems to place it as a top priority, even above his family. He may react this way to money because he is only allowed to do one job, and therefore will gladly charge Christians high interest because of the way that they have treated him, apparently without guilt. When Shylock enters into the bond with Antonio, he agrees with Antonio to ââ¬Å"â⬠¦lendâ⬠¦moneyâ⬠¦not as to thy friendsâ⬠¦butâ⬠¦to thine enemy, who if he break thou may with better face exact the penaltyâ⬠. Answer: Introduction The state of Penang is situated on the north-west coastline of Malaysia and is home to major civilizations of the region that has attracted tourists from across the globe for decades. The natural beauty and culture of the place have attracted tourists for centuries and is still one of the most favoured holiday destinations of the tourists. Apart from culture and natural beauty, mouth-watering food and architecture of the place has always astonished people. The place, its people and businesses have perfectly blended themselves into the modern culture keeping intact its heritage and traditions. Technological advancements have been used and implemented by the tourism industry in such a manner that has brought about a boom in the industry with more and more tourists visiting the place every year. The tourism industry of Penang has perfectly aligned itself with the objectives of the country to promote and establish Malaysia as the most favoured tourism destination of Asia (Jaafar Sukarno , 2011). The results are evident from the statistics provided by the government in their portal Tourism Malaysia. According to the overall statistics published by the government, Malaysia had 25.7 million arrivals in the year 2015 with a total receipt of 69.1 billion MYR from tourism (Samah et al., 2015). These significant figures have increased over the year and show a rising trend. Several factors have resulted in the increase of visitors to the country. Apart from the natural beauty of the place, certain places of Penang have historical importance. Recently, George Town was declared to be a heritage site by the UNESCO and visitors have stated to pour in. On this backdrop, it can be said that there is a close link between tourism and the hospitality industry. Tourism is cannot be complete without people having a place to stay while they visit a place. In essence, the growth and sustainability of the tourism industry is largely dependent on the kind of hotels that are available in the place of tourism. As the inflow of visitors increased, a need was felt to accommodate them in a much efficient manner. This resulted in an increase in the number of hotels in Penang. The increase was in both luxury hotels such as the Hard Rock Hotel, Tune Hotel, Cititeland many more as well as in budget hotels such as Rasa Motel Penang, Value Inn and others. With an increase in the nature of demand of the customers, a shift has occurred from luxury hotels to budget hotels. In the last few years, it has been seen that there is a rise in demand for mid-market budget hotels by the customers and as a result, competition has increased in this segment of the hotel industry of Penang. These budget hotels have proved themselves to be a key contributor to the hotel industry in Penang over the years (Mola Jusoh, 2011). By providing quality services and a wide customer base, these hotels have opened up new avenues for the hotel industry of the region. These hotels have been successful in creating customer loyalty by providing the required services to its customers in an effective manner. The nature and extent of the services rendered to the tourists by the hotel staffs influence the quantum of customer satisfaction. Customer satisfaction is one of the most important objectives of an organisation. The manner in which customer relationship is built determines how much a customer is satisfied with the services rendered by the hotel. Research Background In light of globalisation of the world economy, the service industry is actively playing a pivotal role in the growth and development of the entire region. Tourism has become an important trade category that is fetching a substantial amount of revenue and is contributing towards the overall GDP of the country (Goh, 2015). The growth of the tourism industry is dependent on the state of the hotel industry. Penang is no exception. With the natural and historic beauty of the place, it has become one of the most favourable tourist attractions in south Asia. With this increase in the tourist inflow, a change has taken place in the hotel and hospitality industry. People are now favouring budget hotels over luxurious and expensive ones. With the quality of services rendered in these hotels being of superior quality, the industry is able to build a loyal customer base for itself. Much research has been carried on the status of the hotel industry and on customer satisfaction in Penang (Goh, 20 15). However, not much has been done with respect to this niche class of budget hotels that now play a pivotal role in the development and growth of the entire industry. Building of customer satisfaction is a key factor of success. Customer retention by building customer loyalty has always been an important objective of every business organisation. On this backdrop, the research intends to bring out the factors and the element of customer satisfaction with respect to budget hotels in the area of Penang. Significance of the Research SMBH also known as Small and Medium Budget Hotel operators play a vital role to aid the tourism industry success. As mentioned earlier, the nature and quality of services rendered has become an important area of focus for budget hotel owners. Thus, it is important that service lenders understand perceptions and customer expectations as well as the factors that influence their satisfaction and provide services accordingly (Abdu Bakori, Samdin Hassan, 2012). The reason for this research was to study the perception of customer about the marketing mix 7P's, customer loyalty and customer satisfaction of budget hotels. Even though customers are not expected to understand these technical terms to their fullest extent, their viewpoints are very important to formulate industry standards. In order to have a proper understanding of customer taste, preferences and demand, organisations are required to undertake extensive research work. While conducting the research, it is imperative to segment the targeted customer into different classes based on specific characteristics that are unique. A significant classification is in the form of national and international visitors (Mun, 2016). This classification will help the hotels to formulate strategies differently for each group and to maximise revenue. The primary significance of this study is to focus on the marketing activities of such budget hotels that ultimately lead to their success in gaining customer loyalty and satisfaction. It is the responsibility of the marketing manager to devise proper strategies to attract more and more customers for the hotel. As the importance of these budget hotels has increased significantly, the government shall take effective steps to reward these hotels by re-evaluating their criteria for awarding stars to these hotels depending upon the nature and quality of services rendered by them (Keshavarz Ali, 2015). Therefore, the significance of the study lies on finding out the elements that influence satisfaction of customers who avail services of budget hotels. Problem Statement The hospitality industry is similar to other industries and is characterized by a high level of competition among the industry participants. Each budget hotel has to counter a twofold competition with big and luxurious hotels and with other budget hotels. In order to achieve success, these budget hotels have to price their services in the most competitive manner so that customers are attracted. This is a significant factor as every customer looks for an affordable price in the first place (Poku, Zakari Soali, 2013). It is very transparent that the hotel market is highly competitive, just like any other organization that markets a product in a competitive market, competing for the income of consumer disposable, it should be aware of the quality problems. This is important, especially in the situation of the hotel in which there is reduced clear price competition, but centres more on problems of image, service, facilities and the provision quality. Hotels have therefore, enhanced the ir service quality in order to stay ambitious. Business activities between enterprises become more frequent with the constant development of the Malaysian economy. Moreover, the Malaysian tourist market too becomes more and more energetic. A new hotel - state budget catering to the demands of new customer, it has been supposed to have good potential development, which turns to be one of the high spots of investment. Because of the high competition between budget hotels and the reason to get sustainable competitive benefit a tough battle for customer resource is opened. The central point of this competition falls mainly on the "customers", the budget hotel that has satisfied customers and finally won the trust of customers, it has had the beneficial tool to win this smokeless war (Abdullah, 2015). As the situation becomes tough, hotel owners are trying to gain customer confidence and customer loyalty by providing effective services to them. This in turn increases customer satisfaction. Therefore, it has become essential that hotel owners focus their attention to effective marketing activities. Satisfaction towards goods and integrated service marketing mingle is expected to influence the customer's decision of a patient for enabling the same service in time to come. Also, customer satisfaction is called the business competition success which is the particular's perception of the performance of the relation service to expectations. In the hotel industry, customer bond is also highly essential. It is often shaped by practical experience of the customer during the stay in the hotel. The French Revolution was one of the bloodiest revolutions in history, it was responsible for taking the lives of thousands of Frenchmen. But what was the cause of this carnage? As former Vice President Hubert Humphrey said, "History teaches us that the great revolutions aren't started by people who are utterly down and out, without hope and vision. They take place when people begin to live a little better - and when they see how much remains to be achieved." The French Revolution and the Estates General. The roots of the French Revolution of 1789 can be traced back to the reign of Louis XIV, an absolute monarch. He established the basis of the French Revolution by reducing the power of nobles, taking them away from their land, the roots of their power. Then came Louis XV who allowed political and social positions to be bought by wealthy commoners, enraging nobles even further. These events culminated in Louis XVI, his Estates General and the French Revolution. During the time of the French revolution there where three estates or social classes in France, described by Thomas Jefferson, the American Ambassador as "Clergy, Nobles, and Commons." The Clergy were representatives of the church and served as judges, Nobles were militaristic, and finally the Commoners were divided into the Bourgeoisie, who were wealthy land owners, and the poor peasants. Stands taken between the three estates and Louis XVI caused the French Revolution. Despite their efforts to bring France into a new form of government, one which would serve the needs of the common people, France still fell into a state of corruption. At the young age of 12 Louis XVI had already begun to create his own ideas of government. "Thus, by our primordial origin , all men without exception are my equals. Liberty is one of the rights of man and government is established to conserve it. The objects of all laws is to preserve for mankind, the rights which belong to him. There are four natural rights which the King is obliged to conserve for each of his subjects. These come from God and are older than all laws, political or civil. They are life, honor, liberty, and property." Because of these views on government, Louis XVI brought the Estates General, a ruling body which would represent the common people, into existence, to give all of the estates a say in government. Jefferson described what he believed Louis XVI's reasons were, "the honest man in his kingdom, and the most regular and economical... I believe he will consider the opinion of the States General as the best evidence of what will profit and please the nation and (he) will conform to it." This new form of governing was a far cry from the traditional monarchy, which had ruled France for so long. Louis XVI greeted the Estates General warmly on May 5, 1789 with an opening speech. "Sirs, this day which my heart awaited since a long time has finally arrived and I see myself surrounded by the representatives of the nation which I am honored to command." However his speech was not to be all good news, "The debt of the state, already immense on my coming to the throne, has accumulated during my reign... The increase in the tax has been the unavoidable result and has been rendered more painful by their unequal distribution." Until that time, Nobles and Clergy were exempt from tax, leaving only the lower third estate to pay the debt. So Louis proposed a solution to the Estates General, "A general anxiousness in and an exaggerated desire for change, have taken over the public mind.. if we didn't hasten to stabilize it. It is with my confidence, gentlemen, which I have gathered you together... (for) the first two orders to renounce their financial privileges." Louis XVI's solution to t he high taxation on the third estate was to force the first and second estate to begin paying taxes, like the peasantry. This strengthened his ideals of equality in a society. Its what pretty much everybody strives for, and its the only reason why people want to be successful. Some believe it brings happiness and joy. This thing is a necessity for life; its money. Money is what makes the world go around. It is the one thing that each and every person on Earth wishes they had more of. However, what most of these people dont realize is that money is also the root to all evil. The book The Great Gatsby portrays this theme in a lot of different ways. This negative idea towards money consists of jealousy, unequal power, and murder; all caused by money. In the same ways and more, money is the root to all evil in our own society as well. Many crimes occur with some sort of direct relation to money. Although everybody strives for more money, not everybody spends it wisely or legally. Unfortunately, the book The Great Gatsby and these real life examples are true depictions of reality and everyday lfie. Robberies are often committed in our own communities because of individuals seeking money. There are many examples of this including the Luger Bandit in Los Angeles whos has robbed many banks recently. The latest case was on March 10, 2013. He simply walks into a Wells Fargo bank with a gun, makes the costumers lay on the floor, and forces the employees at gunpoint to put money in his bag. Soon, this man will be arrested and thrown into prison. This kind of action will affect many of his family and friends. Any unfortunate person that was at the wrong place at the wrong time could die. This would mean that that innocent individual died just because of a mans criminal pursuit for money. Another type of criminal activity caused by the pursuit for money in our community is when someone steals from another. An example of this is when two women were robbed at gunpoint in their home in Indiana. Those two women are now scarred for life and will never be able to forget this horrific event. Once again, lives are damaged dramatically by criminals looking for money. Its evident that the power of money often drives people to commit evil crimes. This power of money is demonstrated in The Great Gatsby. Gatsby draws alot of attention to himself because of his wealth. Alot of people look up to him, and want to have the amount of wealth he has. In order to get this money, Gatsby got involved with the mob and organized crime. So Gatsby risked his life by making criminal decisions so he can become wealthy. Money influenced Gatsby to make these decisions with his life, which clearly shows that money is truly the root to all evil. There are multiple cases when people with wealth tend to be more selfish and stuck up. Tom and Daisy in The Great Gatsby can be examples to this idea. Nick explains to us towards the end of the book that Tom and Dasiy are careless, and that they leave messes behind and count on others to fix it for them. If they didnt have the amount of money that they have, they wouldnt be able to do this. Tom and Daisy would appreciate things more, instead of being selfish. The money is obviously the cause to their attitude towards others. A real life example of this is when a wealthy individual has a hired maid to clean up after them. The maids job is to clean up any mess that this person or their family makes. This type of case shows that wealthy people tend to be more lazy and have less responsibilities because they have other people to do it for them. Without all that money, they wouldnt be able to do that. Theyd have to clean up and have the same amount of responsibilities as the average person. These examples from The Great Gatsby and real life definitely represent society in general, because crimes are committed everywhere all the time in search for money. According to statistics, 20 banks are robbed every day and 45 houses are broken into every hour in the United States. With the percent of poverty and unemployed people in need for money increasing, I dont see these rates dropping anytime soon. If anything it could get worse. Our society is simply doomed, we have no hope. On the other side of the story, the people with money spoil themselves by spending it the wrong ways. Alot of wealthy people choose to go to bars, stripclubs, and prostitution houses. It may be legal, but theyre still unwise decisions. Also, the amount of drug abuse continues to increase. In fact, the rate of illegal drug use rose last year to the highest level in nearly a decade. How do people recieve these drugs? They pay for it with money. Without all that money, they wouldnt be able to afford those illegal drugs. It is clear that we cant really do anything to avoid these problems in our society. Itll continue to happen no matter what. Money is very powerful, it rules our world. It tends to control people and take over their minds. This shows in stats of crimes and what those people, lucky enough to have money, do with the money. Impatient people who arent satisfied with the amount of money that they already have attempt to take the easy way out by robbing banks, houses, cars etc. The wealthy individuals make unwise decisions and become lazy because of the money. Theres no doubt, money is the root to all evil. sealbendix853http://www.blogger.com/profile/13187115686947894202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3347184956520952365.post-86383678459913961942019-11-24T01:10:00.001-08:002019-11-24T01:10:02.809-08:00Drama vs. MelodramaDrama vs. Melodrama Drama vs. Melodrama Drama vs. Melodrama By Maeve Maddox A reader asks, What is the difference between ââ¬Å"dramaticâ⬠and ââ¬Å"melodramaticâ⬠in common usage, such as ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t be so dramaticâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t be so melodramaticâ⬠? In common usage, both words are used interchangeably to mean something like ââ¬Å"donââ¬â¢t make such a fuss.â⬠A similar negative use of the noun drama is seen in the expression ââ¬Å"without the drama.â⬠For example: With Cars.com, you get what you need without the drama. Michael Corleone might not have been able to leave the family, but luckily your friends at Foxtel let you leave without the drama. The tagline ââ¬Å"disinfects without the dramaâ⬠differentiates Betadine from other brands. Thanks to advertising, ââ¬Å"without the dramaâ⬠has leaked into general usage as shorthand for ââ¬Å"without difficulty,â⬠ââ¬Å"without complication,â⬠ââ¬Å"without upset,â⬠ââ¬Å"without injured feelings,â⬠ââ¬Å"without tantrums,â⬠etc. Here are examples from various non-advertising contexts: Sort out school fees without the drama 5 Picks to Keep Your Kids Active Without the Drama Merging the Stepfamilies Without the Drama Ever wondered what software development could be like without the drama? The expression ââ¬Å"drama queenâ⬠has become popular to describe a self-centered person- man or woman- who makes an issue of trivial matters of comfort and personal indulgence. The conventional meaning of the word drama is ââ¬Å"a composition in prose or verse, adapted to be acted upon a stage, in which a story is related by means of dialogue and action, and is represented with accompanying gesture, costume, and scenery, as in real life. A melodrama is a drama characterized by exaggeration and sensationalism. The acting style appropriate to a drama is realistic, whereas the acting in a melodrama is bombastic or excessively sentimental. Movies known as ââ¬Å"tears are Sophieââ¬â¢s Choice, Kramer vs Kramer, Love Story, Dead Poets Society, Steel Magnolias, and Ghost. Movies with super heroes and super villains, like the Batman films, are also melodramas. The intention of this study is Skills Footwear & Co. that was established in 1980 and has the core business of manufacturing menââ¬â¢s footwear products for the local market. The firm was very successful primarily due to its competitive edge of the exemplary quality, competitively priced products and sustainable volumes of the products produced. Moreover, according to Lloyd the firmââ¬â¢s competitive advantage was its skilled labor and workmanship as the products were fully handmade. The organization had a total of 110 employees who reported to their middle level managers who reported to the entrepreneur thus having a comparatively flat organizational hierarchy. The operational level workers were on daily wages, which were the industry average rates. The management however received monthly wages. The Sri Lankan shoe industry has a total of 30 medium scaled and 3000 small-scaled manufacturers. The industry produces a wide range of shoes from canvas, sports and leather shoes and is also exporting finished products to EU and USA. As per a research done by the Development of Board Sri Lanka, the shoe industry witnessed a decline from 2007 onwards but the 2010 witnessed a surge in the export market due to the growth in the local tourist sector. However, the workforce in the industry is an issue. This is because the firm is making shoes completely by hand. But this is a difficult task and most firms have not incorporated technology into the process of production, which is not very lucrative for the workmen. sealbendix853http://www.blogger.com/profile/13187115686947894202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3347184956520952365.post-58243131089686607332019-11-17T18:53:00.001-08:002019-11-17T18:53:04.137-08:00Pollution and Encoachment of Coastal habitats in California EssayPollution and Encoachment of Coastal habitats in California - Essay Example Policies have been implemented that allow for greater leniency in the granting of permissions for off-shore oil drilling, and with a reduction of personnel in organizations such as the Environmental Protection Agency, the strict guidelines that have survived are not being sufficiently enforced. The increasing number of people inhabiting areas near water sources such as rivers, lakes, streams and wetlands has caused greater pollution due to more runoff, which ultimately contributes to the pollution of harbors and bays. Polluted runoff and the occasional oil spill threaten coastal resources and often cause beach closures, resulting in risks to public health and significant impacts to local economies. With the advent of the deterioration of Californiaââ¬â¢s coastal environment, some specific programs and organizations were created, such as the Critical Coastal Areas program, which delineates specific land areas of the California coast ââ¬Å"where state, federal and local government agencies and other stakeholders have agreed to improve degraded water quality or protect exceptional coastal water quality from the threat of pollutionâ⬠(CCA Draft Strategic Plan 1), and the California Coastal Commission, established in order to ââ¬Å"protect, conserve, restore, and enhance environmental and human-based resources of the California coast and ocean for environmentally sustainable and prudent use by current and future generationsâ⬠(California Coastal Commission), to name just a couple. However, the proliferation of such agencies and programs has been insufficient to curb the negative effects of pollution and encroachment by humans on natural coastal habitats. According to an assessment of Californiaââ¬â¢s coastal waters done in the year 2000, 98% of the stateââ¬â¢s estuaries and bays were unable to fully support aquatic life, more than 90% carried warnings about eating fish and shellfish, and 86% could not support sealbendix853http://www.blogger.com/profile/13187115686947894202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3347184956520952365.post-18707841653686600492019-11-15T07:25:00.001-08:002019-11-15T07:25:19.992-08:00Ideology And Hegemony In James BondIdeology And Hegemony In James Bond The aim of this essay is to investigate the issues of ideology and hegemony in the James Bond franchise, with particular emphasis on the latest Bond film, Quantum of Solace. Over the forty-four years the Bond films have been running the depictions of men and women in these films has developed and changed. Negative stereotypes were used in the first few Bond films to portray women, such as requiring a male rescue and being a sex object for a male audience. This was the ideology of the era, that women were less dominant than men. With movements such as Feminism these representations have been allowed to evolve into a more realistic depiction of women in the latest Bond films, especially Quantum of Solace. The portrayal of men is much more consistent throughout the Bond films, except a few changes that are made to Bonds character in Quantum of Solace. Ideology and hegemony exist in all the Bond films as they affect the way gender is represented. Ideologies form associations between types of power and the media. They are ideas that give an explanation of the social world. The ideas are usually seen as normal and expected but are frequently only biased and one sided (Branston and Stafford 2006,p.174). However, contrasting ideological views that contain different ideas can sometimes instigate battles within media texts (Croteau and Hoynes 1997,p.165). In comparison, hegemony is a theory that is related to ideology and power. It shows how societies deal with power (Casey et al. 2008,p.142). An Italian Marxist, Antonio Gramsci believed that ruling groups in societies can use either strength and force or consent to keep their power (Croteau and Hoynes 1997,p.169). This was allowed due to their importance in society. Gramsci also believed that certain democracies across the world would find themselves fighting for control. In some cases they would rely on force whilst in others they try the subtle approach of persuasion to gain hegemony (Branston and Stafford 2006,p.177). Hegemony suggests that certain ideas become common sense or natural to people (Croteau and Hoynes 1997,pp.169-170),particularly those of the ruling class and so called the dominant ideology (Croteau and Hoynes 1997,p.165). Marxists studied the differences between the working class and the industrial manufacturers who were all part of Capitalism, and believed your cla ss determined your political views (Branston and Stafford 2006,pp.175-176). Marxists also believed that people in charge of production were able to distribute the dominant ideas into a society. Therefore the working class could be led to believe that mistreatment was expected and normal through dominant ideas and power relationships in the media (Branston and Stafford 2006,p.176). Ideology and hegemony can affect how people are represented in the media. In the past there were striking differences between men and women. In recent times this has become less so, though still exists. This brings about the question as to whether or not the representation of gender in the media has changed over time due to the ideologies of eras changing as well. Sreberny and Van Zoonen defined gender as a contested and relatively unstable discourse (2000,p.13), showing how representations of gender are frequently changing in the media. The representations of James Bond throughout the Bond films have been quite similar: as a quick witted, physically strong man who is attractive and is able to use his charms to seduce many different women. Croteau and Hoynes believed that men would less likely be shown in the household, as this is usually the womans place. Instead, they would more likely be shown in highly regarded jobs (Croteau and Hoynes 1997,p.149). Bond films highlight this as Bond works as a secret agent for MI6 which shows his intelligence and authority in the workplace. In Quantum of Solace, Bond still contains many of his conventional characteristics , for example, his physical strength. It is suggested that men are represented as being more dominant than women, whilst also shown as being involved in much more violence (Croteau and Hoynes 1997,p.149). This can be seen in Quantum of Solace as Bond is involved in many fight scenes, such as, when he attacks the bodyguards in the hotel lift. However, the representation of Bond develops in this film as we see a vulnerable side to Bond that isnt present in the other Bond films. Many other men in Quantum of Solace are represented as powerful, for example, Dominic Greene owns his own company. Greene is portrayed as greedy and manipulative as he is storing water in order to sell it for extortionate prices. Mr White is another enemy who is portrayed as important and secretive as he is part of a top secret organisation, Quantum. These portrayals of men are stereotypical as they depict them as intelligent, pow erful and authoritative. There hasnt been much change in the representations of males in the Bond films, other than in the latest two films, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace we have seen a more realistic portrayal of men. Bond is shown to have fallen in love with the character Vesper and when she dies he is shown as emotional as he wants revenge. This vulnerable side to Bond is representative of men today, as strong men can still have sensitive sides. This shows how the ideologies of the past may be changing. Bonds enemies have always been represented as powerful masterminds and so have not changed much since the films began. In comparison the representation of women in the Bond films has changed much more significantly over the years. This development of the Bond girls may have been instigated by the growth of Feminism. Feminism believed that men treated women as less superior to themselves (Casey et al. 2008, p.121). By the 1970s one of the main issues feminists believed was that many of the representations of women in the media were negative and based on stereotypes whilst also lacking in variety (Casey et al. 2008,p.122). The first Bond film, Dr No, made in 1962, supports this argument with the Bond girl, Honey Ryder. She played the damsel in distress saved by Bond and came across as very naive. She was easily seduced by Bond showing she was submissive and he was in power. In 1975, Laura Mulvey came up with the theory of the male gaze in which texts include women that are sexualised in order for them to appeal to men (Casey et al. 2008,p.122). Honey Ryder appealed to the male gaze as she appeared in s kimpy clothes several times, including the iconic scene of her in her swimming costume. This iconic scene also relates to the fact Hole and Levine (1971:249) argued that feminists believed that some women in the media were trying to make men purchase products by becoming sex objects (Van Zoonen 1994,p.66). Due to the ideologies of this era men were seen as more dominant and in control. This meant that women frequently appeared in films, but often only in secondary, minor roles (Croteau and Hoynes 1997,p.147). This was no different for Honey Ryder, as the main protagonists of Dr No were Bond and his enemy Dr No and she played more of a minor role. By 2002, when Die another Day was released the representation of the Bond girls had evolved. Die another Days Jinx was every bit Bonds equal being one step ahead of him for the majority of the time. She was physically strong and killed several people which represented her as mentally strong. This shows how Feminism may have begun to have an impact on media as it shows a female who is almost equal to the main male protagonist, which would have been very unusual in films before this point. However, she was easily seduced by Bond showing she hadnt become superior to Bond as he still had a certain control over her. Over time film production has developed and with it female stereotypes were questioned, leading to an increase in variety of characters for women in film (Casey et al. 2008,p.124). This can be seen in Quantum of Solace as there are two Bond girls, Miss Fields, who is a conventional Bond girl and Camille who is more of a realistic representation of women today. Miss Fields is quick witted as she helps Bond on numerous occasions. Still, she is represented as vulnerable as she is easily seduced by Bond within a short time and she is killed by Bonds enemies. However, Miss Fields is quite a realistic representation of women today as she works for MI6 which highlights how more women have jobs in highly respected work places now, than in the past. Camille is different to the other Bond girls. For instance, she is attractive but not perfect as she has burn scars on her back. She is also the first ever Bond girl to walk away from Bond without being seduced into bed by him. This suggests that womens roles in film may be becoming more realistic as the majority of women arent perfect and many have the self control to reject mens charms. However, Camille still possesses some of the Bond girl conventions as she needed saving by Bond in the fire. Both Bond girls in this film are very attractive and Liesbet van Zoonen argued that Hollywood cinema has a long standing tradition of constructing women as a spectacle for voyeuristic pleasure (Van Zoonen 1994,p.87).This suggests that even though some ideologies have changed over time others havent and even though Camille has the imperfection of burns on her back she is still a very attractive lady and thus still appeals to the male gaze and the voyeuristic pleasure of men. Another interesting representation of women in Quantum of Solace is that of M. M is represented as a strong female who is very authoritative as she is Bonds boss. She is intelligent as she works for MI6 and so is a powerful lady. However, she is also vulnerable as she is betrayed by one of her bodyguards. The growth of Feminism in the twenty-first century has gained so much for the representation of females in the media. That now even some women believe it isnt essential as the representations have gained in variety and accuracy (Casey et al.2008, p.125). An important issue to note about M is the fact that for the first eleven Bond films M was in fact a man, until it changed to a woman, played by Dame Judi Dench. This choice may have been made to follow the ideologies of the time as women were becoming more involved and important in society and even in the workplace and so by this point it wasnt unusual to have women in highly valued workplaces. Croteau and Hoynes argued that Feminis m and people who fought for womens rights put strain on the media. Therefore, making the media create more varied representations and roles of women in the media, whilst eradicating many of the negative stereotypes of women (1997 p.147). Overall, ideology and hegemony are present in all the Bond films through the representation of gender. The portrayal of gender roles allows us to observe how the ideologies have changed over time. It is most likely that certain ideologies have been influenced by movements such as Feminism, for example due to the strain feminist groups put on the media, the roles and representations of women have become more diverse and a more accurate representation of women in society. The ideologies of gender in the Bond films have changed with the times. This is noticeable with characters such as M, at one point in time women wouldnt have been associated with high earning jobs in the MI6. It is also shown with Bond as he becomes more vulnerable in Quantum of Solace, which is a more accurate representation of men in todays society as they can be sensitive as well as strong. In the future Bond films, the representations of gender may continue to change to fit the ideologies of gender in society at t hat time.
